The Nicholson thread-restoring hand file is 8-3/8" long, has a square shape, and has thread teeth to restore damaged metric external threads on bolts. The file has teeth on both ends to fit the following metric thread sizes: 0.80, 1.00, 1.25, 1.50, 1.75, 2.00, 2.50, and 3.00 mm. It has no teeth in the center to allow for grip.

Hand files are used to remove material and smooth and shape workpieces. They have forward-facing cutting teeth and cut when pushed over either a stationary or rotating workpiece. Single-cut teeth have single rows cut diagonally across the width of the file. Double-cut teeth have two sets of rows cut in opposite directions. American pattern files have three coarseness grades. Coarse, also known as bastard cut, is suitable for efficient, heavy material removal where finish is not a concern. Medium, also known as second cut, offers average material removal and finish quality. Fine, also known as smooth cut, provides the smoothest finish. Swiss pattern files have eight coarseness grades, from 00 (coarse), 0 (medium), and 1 to 6 (fine to finest), offering a smoother, more precise finish than equivalent American pattern files.

Nicholson manufactures hand tools and power tool accessories. The company is headquartered in Sparks, MD.

I used this before at my last job and loved having this around, switched jobs and they didn't have one so I got me this and it's been a life saver, for those that know how to use it properly. Don't forget to get a good thread pitch gauge. You won't use it all the time but it'll come in handy when you need it.

Nicholson, what happened? You were THE file company! This thread restorer is a FILE, thus I expected perfection. But I received junk... Most of the high star ratings and previous experience with Nicholson convinced me to buy this restorer over other brands. A big mistake. I purchased a Gearwrench brand thread file in inch pitch at the same time as this metric Nicholson file and there’s a night/day difference in the quality of the cutting teeth. The cutting edges of the Nicholson restorer are dull, no bite at all whereas the Gearwrench file is keen enough to shave the back of my fingernails. That’s a good show of cutting ability. The profile shape of the Nicholson teeth seems inconsistent, as maybe the cutters used to give the longitudinal shape to the teeth have worn out. This Nicholson thread restorer is going back and I already have its equivalent Gearwrench tool in my shopping basket.

My first use for this file was on an atv axle that had stripped the threads on the end from a wheel working its way off. With this tool, the threads were good as new in about 2 minutes of filing. Definitely worth having in your toolbox.

Worked perfectly to clean up the mess I made cutting a stuck nut off a ball joint stud. Cleaned the threads right up and the new nut spun on with no issue at all. Great product, and covers pretty much all the common metric sizes so its really handy to have in the garage in a pinch.

I needed this for smashed barrel threads. Fixed the threads fine, but the 1mm thread file had a few of the teeth on one side broken off. Didn't really make a difference, but it wasn't perfectly made. Still, works good!

Once again I proved to myself that having the right tool makes the job much easier. After struggling to correct damaged threads on an automotive O2 sensor, I broke down and ordered the subject metric hand file to get the job done right. Voila, a few minutes of working the threads with the file made life a whole lot better...sensor screwed in without any more fuss. Product quality looks good, so I expect the file to outlast me.

I had some damaged threads on a large axle shaft. At first I contemplated buying an expensive die to clean up the threads, but I bought the thread file instead. Boy am I glad that I did... the file did a great job cleaning up the threads, and I can use the file on various sized bolts and thread sizes. I'm glad that I have this handy item in my toolbox.
