Poor design, worse workmanship. I was able to get it working like I wanted after a few hours of modifications.1. The screw threads that secure the pulley mechanism are tapped directly into the (soft and cheap) cast aluminum arm. They are also misaligned with the opposing bolt hole such that the screw threads will not fully engage. Result: the aluminum threads stripped out without much effort. Fix: drill out the aluminum threads, purchase a longer cap screw, and add a steel nut. Much more secure, but also harder to make adjustments when away from home.2. The up/down location of the upper pulley is not adjustable. Result: on my bike at least, the rear cog chain wrap is no better than a single-pulley design (which, incidentally, is the entire reason I "upgraded" to a two-pulley tensioner). Fix: flip the arm over to prevent the derailleur hanger stop from engaging, replace the loose steel bushing with a tighter plastic spacer, position the upper pulley as desired, and securely tighten the arm onto the bike to prevent rotation.3. The pulley guards are too narrow for a single-speed (1/8") chain, especially if you have a master link. Result: the chain rubs on the guards. Fix: disassemble the pulleys and add a few thin washers to space the guards farther apart. Not a huge deal.4. The tension spring is WAY too stout. Result: a little extra resistance against pedaling (as well as significant installation torque required on the pulley screw - see problem #1 above). Fix: none that I could think of.All in all, this item is now working like I had hoped, except for the heavy spring tension. But I don't think the design/workmanship warrant the nearly $45 price tag. A few minor design changes (adjustable upper pulley, steel threads, extra pulley spacing) would have made this thing perfect for very little extra manufacturing cost.

So far so good. It installed in about 5 min, and is working properly. Feels a little loose around the bolt that holds the unit to the derailleur hanger. Spring is HEAVY, so make sure you loosen the chain line adjustment, and swivel the unit so that is isn't under too much tension. As it came it would have been way tight, I spun the unit til it was about 8:00 without tension, where the tension has it sitting somewhere between 6-7:00. Unit is definitely lightweight.

I used this tensioner to convert a 2006 Orbea Onix to single speed. I have a Shimano WH-7800 free hub with a stock 14T cog from a Shimano 10 speed cassette. I run a 10 speed 3/32 Shimano chain on it.I think the trick with this tensioner is that you need to get the chain line adjustment nearly perfect BEFORE you run a chain through it. If you just slap this on, run the chain through it without aligning it with the cog and front ring then it is going to be difficult to adjust it later. If you need to adjust it again after this then you need to back out and start over to get it right. Also the bottom pulley wheel should not be used as the guide to line up the chain line. The top pulley wheel should be used. I found that the bottom pulley wheel actually is a bit cockeyed when the chain tension is setup correctly. But, there is no chain noise and I have put a ton of torque on it going up hills already. The chain has not slipped once so far. This tensioner needs to be in the position it is in when you take it out of the package. If you monkey with that position before putting it on then it is not going to work. Trust me on this.It seems flimsy when you first put it on which made me a bit nervous at first. But after getting the tension right, it worked very well.I have put about 25 miles on it so far and it works well. We shall see how it holds up over a few hundred miles.UPDATED:After ~3 years and well over 1000 miles on it, this tensioner is still working great. I have had no issues with it.

Nice but could be better gear and bearings don't think they will last long. Nice design, very adjustable and ample spring tension

This is the chain guide used by the folks I purchased my recumbent three wheeler from, but I couldn't keep it from slipping chain so I removed it and adjusted the chain to work without a chain guide/tensioner. I'm a novice bike mechanic so it could be how I installed it. I did notice that the gears, being plastic, were getting beat up just with my trying to adjust it to function for me.

my chain tensioner lasted a whole 5 minutes and it made my bike sound like it had a playing card in the spokes the gears have to much play and the connection to the derailer hanger has to much play. The chain rubs thru the whole tensioner when in motion. Very poor design the metal pin that hold the tensioner in place once mounted to the derailer hanger broke like plastic...im waiting on the seller to see if they will refund me my money cause this product only makes a cool paper weight!!!!!

My current bicycle project requires a front derailleur but not a rear one, so this little device fills the role of chain tensioner nicely. It's very low-profile and cleanly designed, and the appropriate parameters are adjustable with common tools. Even though the spring seemed quite stiff there's plenty of "slack" in it to shift easily between my front three chainrings, and I have yet to note any extra noise from it while riding. The one potential point of issue I can find is that the mounting bolt doesn't quite fit perfectly into its socket on the main arm, so the whole thing jiggles around a bit when loose. It won't shift around while under tension though, so this is kind of a nitpick.

I needed a chain tensioner for my trials bike and similar models were much more expensive. This one was light weight and seems very sturdy. Overall I think its a great deal.
