It works, as far as telling if outlet/receptacle is grounded and polarity is correct. It's advertised as a GFCI Tester, but it lacks the button to mimic a ground fault, and trip the GFCI and assure it functions correctly. Amazon should correct this incorrect advertising.

This type of device clearly lets you know how the wires are connected behind the cover plate of an electrical outlet. You can see if there is an open connection, a reversed wiring (between the power wire and the neutral), or if the dedicated ground is missing/not connected.Although some device like this might not be necessarily used by a housing inspector when they inspect a house. As a homeowner, or renter you can verify things for yourself.I've had a variation of one of these gadgets for year, and year, it still work fine.

I have 3 of these in various toolboxes. Good price for good quality tester. Should test all outlets for correct wiring with connected ground. Also do periodic test of GFCI outlets.
