I'm a hobbyist woodworker, and I wanted to try my hand at some beginner pen turning. This has been a great little intro kit. It has everything you need to construct pens after you turn your blanks. There are no instructions, but I was planning to use YouTube videos for the tutorials anyway. The kit does not include any of the actual turning equipment, obviously; it's just the pen innards, but all of the pieces seem to be of high quality, and after some trial and error, I was able to get a couple of crude beginner pens made (yay!). I'm certainly not a professional pen maker, but overall, I've been very happy with the kit.

This 10-pack of Titanium-Silver Slimline Woodturning Pen Kits come with five titanium finishing and five silver finishing, along with ten pen covers. The pen covers are made from two 1mm thick 1-3/8" wide brown leather strips stitched together and would be appropriate for a normal gift giving selection for a slimline pen. I tried one of my cigar-style turned pens and it was a little tight but fit. The finish coating on both is decent and seems to hold up well. I, personally, prefer the titanium finishing as I think it looks more eloquent, but both finishes are good. These are good parts kits, but not necessarily for a complete beginner for two reasons. The lack of any instructions would hamper a first-time pen woodturner. Secondly, there are no bushings included or even recommended, probably due to a lack of instructions as well. For reference though, I measured the clip end at 8.50mm, the center band at 8.60mm, and the writing tip end at 8.5mm. So, for someone that has turned slimline kits before, they probably already have the bushings they need for these kits on hand. The pen turning knob in each kit turns well and the ink writes smoothly. Since I have turned numerous pen kits, these pen kits worked very well and are a good value, especially since they include the pen covers.

I would have rated this set a 5 if it came with instructions or basic information and prep dimensions. The components are very high quality and I’ll be able to make 10 nice pens with this kit.

In the interest of full disclosure, as a trusted and unbiased Amazon reviewer, I was able to request this product free of charge.I was impressed with this kit. All the parts you need are included, and each kit is contained in its own separate bag. The parts appear to be of good quality. I am not a big fan of PU type simulated leather, but the supplied sheaths are fairly substantial, have even stitching and generally look quite decent. If you have never turned pens before there are some special tools that you will need in addition to your normal turning tools. There are a myriad of videos on YouTube which illustrate the process and the tools. If you look on Amazon and scroll down just a bit, you will see the one I purchased. I would get a kit that includes the mandrel. I would be more specific, but Amazon might flag the review as a direct comparison which they don't seem to like. However, I think my choice will be pretty obvious. If you plan to make a lot of pens, a pen turning chuck is very useful; otherwise, you need a chuck with longer jaws that can grip small profiles. Not having either of these probably means wasting a lot of wood. If you search on Amazon for pen turning chuck, you will see some examples. The supplied ball point ink cartridges are black ink which I prefer. This is packaged in a nice box; makes a good gift for a turner.

I am completely new to wood turning, so I'm in a bit over my head with this kit as there are no included instructions. However, the included components are very, very nice and (hopefully when I figure this out) will make some very nice pens. I have some walnut stock that I would like very much to use to create some of these pens.

This is a nice pen kit and the quality of the actual pens is good. It does not include any actual wood turning supplies so if you're a beginner looking to get started with everything you need, this isn't what you're looking for.It does not include blanks or the tools required to turn them, just the innards for pens.
