You have to constantly restart the scanner because it only runs for 10 seconds then times out. That's not very long if you're trying to sweep a wiggly animal. Wish it was at least double that.Scanner came out of the box partially charged, I turned it on and immediately scanned 6 animals, it picked up each chip right away. Functionality is fantastic. Some people have complained that the scanner beeps which can startle an animal. I think most of them make some noise, and I'm talking to the animal and distracting them the entire time so the beep doesn't bother me. It's how you know a chip was detected when you can't see the screen.

Came fully charged. Worked just fine. Read the chip on my dog. I donate these to animal rescue volunteers who do outreach. Will be ordering several more. I wish they read the old 9 digit chips, but this is better than nothing.

Excelente producto. A buen precio ofrece el sencillo escaneo del chip de mi mascota. Pude probarlo con mi mascota de forma fácil y me da tranquilidad de usarlo cuando quiera. Su pila es durable y basta con usar el instructivo y cable. Muy buen producto

Although easy to use the reader is not universal. Won't read half of our chips.

Works like a champ!!! Bad reviews are from people who don't know what chips/tags they have. We have 134.2KHz FDX-B PIT tags for our reptiles & it works perfectly. It even told me I had FDX-B tags in the display! The instruction picture is included that clearly say how to use it as well. "3. Place a tag in the antenna loop, press button to read." Will be promoting this reader to friends in FL to read their PIT tags. SO much cheaper than the $280-600 readers!!Update: 11/20/2020 - worked on all the PIT tags in my friend's reptiles as well!

It works great but it's not useful if you aren't already set up as a provider with the chip company. It's easy to use and quickly locates chips and gives a readout of the chip number. You can then take the chip number and do an online search for the brand of the chip and call the chip company. But they won't release the info from chip to a member of the public, so it won't help if you are looking for the owners of a lost pet. A vet or shelter that is set up as a provider for the chip company would have to get that info. So, even though the scanner works great, it didn't really accomplish what I thought it would do and I'll probably donate it to a shelter.

This is the deal of the century! If you’ve priced microchip readers you’ll wonder why this one is so inexpensive. It works just fine! It works on all of my dogs and scanned the chips in my horses as well. This is a great item to have on hand in case a stray dog or cat show up in your yard. Scan them and if there’s a chip you can look up the number by googling “pet microchip look up” and hopefully hunt down their family. I’m very happy with this purchase!

This scanner does not detect all kinds of microchip, so the description is inaccurate. I have several pets of my own, and I am frequently finding stray animals and taking them in until owner can be located. I can't easily transport every found animal to a veterinary clinic or the humane society to have them checked for a chip so I wanted to have my own scanner. I didn't want to spend three to five hundred dollars for one, if a fifty-dollar one would suffice. I read a lot of reviews and found conflicting information on most of the fifty-dollar ones. Finally I ordered one to see for myself. This scanner charged up in a short time and was ready to use, but when I scanned my three cats and one dog that had their chips inserted by my veterinarian, there was no response from the scanner. Then I tried it on the cats that had their chips inserted at a VIP clinic at Tractor Supply. Again, there was no response from the scanner. Then I tried it on the cats that got their chips at the Waco Animal Birth Control Clinic (ABC), and got immediate response, with the scanner showing the number of the chip as it was on my paper receipt for each cat.I looked up the records from my veterinarian and learned that Avid chips were used and I remembered reading some reviews that suggested Avid chips were "old style," and were not detectable by many scanners. The VIP clinic records did not say what kind of chips they used. Just to be sure the chips from my vet were still functioning, I took my dog to ABC and had them scan him. They got an immediate read of the Avid chip, and the display on the scanner actually showed that it was an AVID chip.Since I will never know what kind of chip a stray cat or dog might have, I must have a scanner that will read at least all the chips used in the USA. Apparently I will need one of the more expensive (and larger) scanners.I did call the number on Amazon that was supposed to offer technical assistance, and talked to someone who obviously just looks at something on-line and doesn't really know anything about this product. He asked me questions about charging the battery, and assured me it was universal because the description said so. When I told him I had read some reviews that said it did not work on AVID chips he looked a little further and left me on hold for a minute then came back and said that indeed it would not read AVID chips. So I returned this one for a refund.
