i purchased this grinder a little over a month ago, it arrived with one wheel cracked and the other completely broken. when I reported it, i was told to contact the MFGer. i still have not heard from anyone about them. fortunately, the shafts are still intact and run true. purchased a CBN wheel and so far it is fantastic.

My work has the same bench grinder and it’s been great so I figured I’d buy the same one for home use. I did a lot of research and it seems that, unless you go big with a Jet or Baldor, most bench grinders are very similar. I knew that the one at work was reliable, quiet, and had minimal vibrations. And I knew that I’m taking a gamble with vibrations due to the stones themselves.Out of the box, there was quiet a bit of imbalance and lots of vibrations up and down the variable speed range. Basically, it would walk off the bench if it wasn’t bolted down. And when bolted down, it noticeably shook the bench. Not a lot but enough to be annoying.I watched a lot of YouTube videos on reducing vibrations by machining washers and balancing the stone wheels but I found that WoodTurnersWonders sells machined 5/8” ID aluminum washers. The pack of 4 washers was $12. Took 4 days to receive. I needed to install two of the machined aluminum washers first to space out the grinding wheel properly (replaces the inside Delta washer), then the grinding wheel, then a Delta washer, and finally the 24mm nut. Took out 90% of the vibration. I also tried their Self-Aligning Spherical Washers but it didn’t help at all. Dressed the wheels with the dressing tool and vibrations at all rpm is minimal. I could totally live with that.I replaced one of the wheels with a wire wheel and the machined washers smoothed it out as well.Probably the easiest upgrade you could do to your bench grinder!

I have mounted the grinder on a stand and powered it up but have not used it yet. So far, so good. One of the most frequent criticisms I have read on the review boards for this and other brands of low cost grinders is that the wheels wobble and vibrate and that it would arrive with damaged wheels or missing parts. I went ahead and bought the Delta because I have a Delta made in Milwaukee that my grandfather bought over 50 years ago. My grandfather used it for metal art work as a hobby and then as a side business. I still use it to sharpen tools, light metal grinding and buffing. The new Delta is China made and caused me some pause because of all the negative reviews. The Delta I got did not have missing parts or broken wheels even though Amazon shipped it to the wrong distribution center and it sat for days in at least two central depots. Yes the assembly directions are a nightmare but there it's only the shields and tool mounts that need to be assembled and there are enough YouTube videos to walk you through setting it up. The grinder wheels did not wobble or vibrate nor were they broken. The parts such as the tool rests and brackets to hold the shields are all metal, not plastic. I tested it right out of the box and it ran smoothly. It comes up to speed quickly. Once assembled and mounted, it still ran smoothly. So smoothly that when I turn it off, the wheels keep rotating quietly for a long time which I will need to keep in mind. I wonder if it has a break mechanism?I selected this grinder because it had an 8 inch wheel and variable speed. As a bonus, one tool rest is angled for drill bit sharpening and it has a light with it's own switch. By the way, it comes with a dressing tool so no need to buy one. My old Delta did not have shields or guards and built in tool rests and I have now replaced the grinding wheels with a wire wheel and buffing wheel. I am wondering if all the protection on the new Delta will inhibit how I use it. For the low cost, I am very pleased with the tool so far. Now for the real test.

When I was looking to buy a bench grinder, I noted the ratings of the various grinders on Amazon. Even though this model has a 3.9 star rating, I decided to buy it. I know the Delta name, and they always made superior tools. Well, I am not disappointed! This grinder is high quality, and operates with little vibration. It has good power for a 6 inch, and the variable speed is a very important feature in a bench grinder. I cannot understand why the ratings are not higher, since this is probably the best value for the money anywhere. I am very happy with it, and since it has a 5-year warranty (returns to Northern tool centers nationwide), I can depend on it to provide years of service.

It seems to me that Delta and God have something in common. They don't make junk. The similarity ends there. This grinder can be put together in as little as fifteen to twenty minutes. Everything was very well packed and the parts are well made. The instruction booklet was easy to follow.Previous reviews complained that the washers were not good and caused wooble in the wheels. I checked that first and found the left side wheel to have wooble. I fiddled around with that for a while and found that the shaft ends were both coated at the factory with a light coat of grease. A piece of crud had gotten to the shoulder of the left side wheel causing the wooble. Once I discovered that and cleaned the shaft the wheel was assembled and ran true.I removed both wheels and sounded them for safety. Both wheels rang true like a bell. I appreciated that Delta provided a diamond truing stick with their grinder. I don't have to spend extra time or money buying one.Having spent years in tool rooms and machine shops I like getting an eight inch grinder with variable speeds. This grinder looks to me like a winner.
