I like to make bad drawings of every sort, including graphite, colored pencil, and charcoal. I got this to play around with techniques that involve drawing with a blending stump, erasing out highlights, toning paper, etc. This arrived well packaged and completely wrapped in plastic, which is great because if the jar lid loosens in transit you'd be in for a big mess when you opened it otherwise. As it turns, though, getting the lid off was actually a bit difficult and messy, but I managed it. I wish the lid was a little easier to use, and I find it does tend to stick. This is probably partly due to the nature of charcoal powder, but a different type of lid would be better. That said, the lid opening is wide, which is what you want for getting your drawing implements in there or scooping a bit out. This is a decent amount of charcoal powder that I expect will last me a long time. A little goes a long way, as it turns out. It spreads nicely using blending stumps and those foam blending things. You can easily draw with it, and it erases out well, particularly on smooth paper. Along with a charcoal pencil and/or compressed block (or willow, vine, etc.) you do some pretty cool drawings. Because it's loose powder, you'll have to use something else for really dark marks, or apply this in layers.Overall, it's a lot of fun and I look forward to making a lot more ugly drawings with it!

Surprised I never picked this up before. When working in charcoal, a lot of the time I like to start with a grey canvas. But I've always just taken a stick and rubbed it around. This makes it MUCH easier. Now I can focus on using the sticks for my darks and removing and white for the lights.I'll have to look into other ways to use the powder.
