About this item

  • Size: 1/4 inch X 6 inch
  • Heavy duty wood screw with 6 sided hex bolt head
  • Features deep wood screw threads and does not accept a nut
  • Used in applications where standard wood screws cannot support the load (deck building, etc.)
  • Requires pilot hole to be drilled and installs using wrench or socket tool

Lag screw bolts are used in place of standard wood screws whenever the mounting surface must bear a heavy load. The hex head allows for lag screws to be tightened with more torque than can be used on Phillips head screws, though a pilot hole is still required prior to installation. Note that lag screws do not accept nuts as they are technically thick heavy duty wood screws with threads designed to cut into wood. They are ideal for use on decks since installation can be accomplished without having access to both ends of the fastener, as opposed to standard hex bolts that require a nut on the opposite end.

Several of these broke off when installing them even with a pre-drilled pilot hole into soft wood!

I used them to fasten 4x4’s together. Worked well, but 2 did snap while tightening

Had to buy a longer drill bit to use. I would drill in about 8 inches expecting the screw to seat in the last 4 inches.I was unable to achieve that and had to drill the entire length to keep the bolts from snapping.

Good price for long lag screws. If you are not careful in drilling the right sized pilot hole and lubricating the bolt (I use bar soap), the lag screws may break when tightening them.

These are really long lag screws, however if you try to drive them into anything (I was driving them into live Juniper which is very soft wood) they will shear off. You have to pre-drill the entire length of the hole or you'll end up with the head of the screw in your bit driver...If you have a nice long bit and want to take the time to pre-drill they are probably OK but you'll still want to use 2 b/c I wouldn't trust them to hold. If you don't want to pre-drill, get a decent screw from somewhere else. These are pretty bad.
