These feel premium compared to the pot-metal variety. The hex head is 6mm.1/4- 20 threads on the ones I used. The trick to installing these plumb is to not use an Allen key but rather to make an insert tool from a bolt and nut. Then you can use a drill - I used an impact driver - and focus on keeping the insert plumb instead of wrestling with turning a wrench. I used a 2" long 1/4-20 bolt with a nylon lock-nut to make my insert tool. The insert threads on and butts against the nut. After driving it to depth the bolt breaks free easily. To remove the insert you will need to use an Allen key.If they are going into a blind hole make sure the bolt doesn't stick out past the end of the insert.I bored 3/8" pilot holes and that worked fine in maple for this size insert.

Arrived promptly. These were used to secure bolts to 1" HDPE. Drilled a 3/8" pilot hole to start and the insert screwed in easy. Bolts hold really well.

perfect inserts I luckily have # drills so didn't need to find a metric bit. found the hex head a little sloppy in some will inserting but would definitely recommend these.

These make for much easier fastening of things like legs to tabletops and they work well.I'll agree with an earlier commenter that these are quite challenging to drive "Square". I didn't have the 10mm drillbit recommended for predrilling so I used a 25/64" bit which is REALLY close. I found that in pine and other relatively soft woods, the 25/64" bit was A-OK, but when I tried it in hickory I REALLY struggled putting in the inserts by hand. I managed to get a 10mm bit (which is almost imperceptibly larger) and it definitely made a difference for inserting into the hickory. Even with the correct bit size I found it really challenging to have these seat perfectly square when using a hex wrench by hand. I found an appropriate adaptor for my driver and it definitely made squaring these MUCH easier, so I'd recommend having all the right bits at hand before tackling these with a very hard wood.
