I have a dozen or more Robert Sorby tools. These are the best I have ever used and I have used many. If you purchase the crappy ones they will go dull every couple min and ruin your wood. The China ones are worthless. These are made in England from quality SS. Spend the money and get the best. Been using these for years. Going to get the 10TPI next. I had a question and design modification many years back and they actually called me and we discussed a change to one of their tools and they sent me sample to try,

These thread cutting tools have a solid quality feel to them. And they are sharp. I am using them to cut grooves in exotic hardwoods -- Katalox and Bloodwood, so far -- and also Delrin acrylic rod material (I make bagpipes). Works great!

Bought this to make threads in wood turning and practiced and practiced but never got a good thread using this and other threading tools. Sitting in my tool box collecting dust.

I don't buy just Sorby tools but for something like thread chasing I wanted tools that I can trust to be what I need. With the instructions included and many youtube videos to watch, thread chasing can be successful. But ... practice, practice, practice! It will pay off.

With these two tools making threaded tops to wooden boxes can be easily accomplished (with practice). It's a skill that has been practiced for many years by skilled artisans, but can now be accomplished by anyone. The 'kit' containing the two cutters has detailed instructions. After a bit of practice you can be making wooden threads. Enjoy these tools for both their versatility and their usefulness as an important addition to your tool inventory.

These chasers work great, and they were a great price. Sorby makes very good tools and I have been very happily making wooden threads.

Sorby generally makes a fine product and the hand thread chasers are no exception. They have shorter handles than most turning tools but that is appropriate for hand thread chasers since they are used with only one hand. I have not use another brand of thread chasers to cannot do a comparison. I bought the 16TPI cutters since I believe that to be a pretty good size for small boxes. 20TPI I understand are easier to learn with but makes a finer thread than I wanted and I felt 10tpi would be a little too course and perhaps harder to learn with. The finer the TPI the slower the threading motion required which is where the skill comes in. There is a learning curve to using hand thread chasers that requires some dedication and practice. Once you get it down it is not that hard to get back up to speed after laying off for a while by doing a practice run on a scrap. If you are on a tight budget, know that Sorby chasers are sometimes packaged with a fancy gauge that might be handy but not essential but does cost. A thread tool support makes hand chasing a little easier but is not essential. I fabricated one from a 9" carriage bolt based on a description in Raffan's book, Complete Illustrated Guide to Turning. If you value your time you and not into making tools, the tool support is not that expensive. Like most turning tools, the chasers need some sharpening out of the box. Be aware that most folks will likely thread at speed between 300-400 so if you have a lathe that won't turn this slow, I would forget hand chasing.
