It takes great courage to share an honest assessment of a wartime experience. Commander left it all out there. She stepped up to be a support for those much younger. But she isn't afraid to let you know what it is like to be on the front line and sacrifice the comforts of living to save lives. She said what everyone else was experiencing, the unbearable heat, intense sand storms, lack of privacy, constant fear of dying or having to kill to live and interminable waiting for the execution of movements. But despite all that she focused on her mission to be ready and be a part of a team that saved lives. Thank you to all our military medical folks for living up to your oaths of service. I spent a year in the Middle East and six months of it was staying in air conditioned space during daylight hours. I lived in a community that was a replica of a stateside community with little plots of grass that needed lots of water to stay green. You couldn't swim in the gulf water and if you did you need a quick shower to get the salt and sand off your body. I was happy to leave when my tour was up and would never go back.

I like the very vivid description, it does bring the story for us to live it.I am a veteran too, I totally agree that to serve our nation is the most important mission we have.This is a superb book to tell the world about the great contributions of our military service members.

I found this book to be very enlightening! It made the War in the Middle East so real! It showed the dedication of the nurses, doctors, and medics who saved the lives of so many men and women. We should be thankful for this dedicated military personnel and especially to Cheryl Ruff who spent twenty five years in service to her country. We need more unselfish people like her!!!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and found it very inspiring. While some have taken her detailed descriptions of life in a war zone as complaints, I feel that these descriptions help the reader better understand the pressures involved in caring for injured men, women, and children under the circumstances of war. This is one nurse's courageous story of service and I applaud her dedication to the USA, the Navy, and all of humanity.

I was in the Navy myself. So I thought this would be a very cool book. NO. All she did was complain about the sand and heat. Don't buy it. It's written in a manner that is for Jr. high school.

The parts covering actual medical topics were very good. Our daughter is a navy nurse so I'm am sure we enjoyed it more than any one with out a connection. Well written and had "heart". Alot of complaining but considering the living conditions am sure she could have written many books just about that!

I read this book in two sitting. Just couldn't put it down. It chronicles the author's years in the navy, on her journey from joining the navy and becoming a nurse and eventually a CRNA. The writing style is accessible an not pretentious.As a young critical care nurse joining the military as a reservist andhoping to someday become a CRNA I am so grateful that the author shared her experience in this memoir. An invaluable read. Many memorable moments she described will stick with me.
