The original and this version each stand on their own as masterpieces - and the music is absolutely gorgeous! The John Williams music is otherworldly and magical.

I do not discuss plot details or give away spoilers. My take on this movie is that it moves along at a more brisk pace than the original, directed by Billy Wilder. This one, by Sydney Pollack, has a more modern feel and the difference approaches between the two directors is a study in itself.Directors aside, the casting for this is spot on. Of course the cast of the 1954 version to which I am comparing contains some of our greatest actors, and Audrey Hepburn is absolutely magnetic in Wilder's film. However, Julia Ormond is the perfect choice for the remake. She is one of the reasons why this film worked out so well (in my opinion.)Although I was born in the late 1940s and grew up revering the actors in the earlier version, as well as loving the production values of the older movies in general, this is one remake that eclipses the original. I am set in my ways, so for me referring a remake over an original film does not happen often. In the case of this movie, though, it comes across as modern, paced to match 1990s life in the US (with dialog to match), and showcases a cast that was perfect for the script.

Love this Romance. A lovely story about a chauffeur's daughter who falls hopelessly in Love with the young wealthy son Greg Kinnear (David) who turns out to be a cad. Ford steps in and sweeps her off her feet, and manipulates her into falling in love with him. Then he dumps her. A heartbreaking scene when she realizes she's been used just to save a business deal. All is not lost, and Ford (Linus Larrabee) realizes the error of his ways and follows her to Paris to pick up the pieces .with Julia Ormand ( Sabrina). I think I know the lines already! "Where live do you Linus?""Is that what the really say about me!" (In an intimate conversation cooking clams on the beach in New England). Nancy Marchand is fabulous as Mrs. Larrabee, and is very funny and serious at the same time.

I remember watching the original Sabrina with Audrey Hepburn and loving it, so when this newer version was on the TV, I watched it and loved it as well. Unlike some, who either liked the older or the newer version of it, I'd have to say that I liked both equally. Yes, they each have their own negative/positive moments (ie: the comment where Hepburn's "grown up" Sabrina was more childish acting, whereas Ormond's was more adult-like and sophisticated) I do have to agree with. HOWEVER, it is the storyline itself that captured my interest from the start, and I belive that both actresses played the role convincingly.Possible SPOILER alert:In my own opinion, Sabrina doesn't entirely "grow up" after she leaves for Paris, since one of the reasons for her going is to get away from David, the womanizing younger brother of the millionaire family her father chauffeurs. As a child/teenager, she is (pretty much) obsessed with him, while he doesn't even see her as anything but the chauffeur's daughter. But when she is in Paris, she cant seem to forget him, while he is now finally planning to settle down and marry. When she returns home, she is a very beautiful woman, with the touch of Paris elegance, and yet she is clearly not over David. He has now noticed her as a woman and is paying her the attention she's always wanted him to.David's older brother, Linus, always looking out for the family business and money, is none too pleased with the attention David is now showing Sabrina, because David's fiancee is the daughter of their biggest business client, and one mis-step could put a halt to the contract. Therefore, Linus decides to step in and distract Sabrina from David before things go too far and ruin the merger. Long story short, they both unintentionally fall in love with each other. I think after spending time with Linus, and actually BEING in love rather than infatuated, NOW she is grown up. Which things matter more than just a silly girlhood crush. Only, Linus has always had the business-side at the forefront, and knows he may have to break her heart. Ah, the decisions he must face! What's more important, Money or love? Which does he choose?I love this movie and I just *had* to buy it...
