Its appearance is best suited to planted aquaria, but may be used in any freshwater aquarium environment. Flourite Black Sand is most effective when used alone as an integral substrate bed, but it may be mixed with other gravels. Gravel modifiers such as laterite are not necessary. Flourite Black Sand is not chemically coated or treated and will not alter the pH of the water. Flourite Black Sand is good for the life of the aquarium and need not be replaced.

I used this for my Reeves, cagles map, ouchit a map, northrn mud and razor musk turtles. I used a large strainer to wash It and collected the strained sediment in a bucket. That allowed me to separate the large rough sharp pieces from the extremely soft Mud sand. I only used the sediment, If they accidentally injest it I know they will pass it because its softer than sand and natural not artificial. Then i rinsed the sediment carefully until the water ran clear which took a few washes but it was worth it. I combined this with turtle sludge destroyer and after 4 days the tank is crystal clear and the turtles love playing with it. Honestly it doesn't turn into a mess when they play, it immediately settles back down in place nicely without clouding. Never see poop because it houses the beneficial bacteria so the floor always remains clean. I highly recommend it. Two bags filled my 40 gallon breeder tank. Its 2023 and its still crystal clear.

Honestly this works great for plants but for the first probably 6 or 7 months it will ruin your tank. It doesn't come clean either so rinsing is a waste. But it does work well for what it's supposed to just know this will change your tanks water chemistry alot and quickley so watch that.

I needed this for my planted tank! Its so much easier to add plants to than normal gravel or the other variety made by Seachem which you have a hard time keeping a plant in.

Honestly awful. There is so much dust in this product it is unbelievable. I poured 1 bag of sand In a bucket and let it run under water in 2 hour intervals while disturbing the product intermittently. I thought finally after two days and at least 6 hours total in just rinsing I finally got it to clear up. I was soooo wrong. My 20 gallon tank is CAKED in clay powder. I bought some product to clear up the tank which works to some degree but the clay dust just layers on top of the sand. Any type of disturbance creates a cloud of dust on everything. So I’m trying to use the pillowcase method of constant disturbance and rinse. This is a very expensive product and extremely high maintenance. I switched to sand to help with my maintenance not make it more difficult. So pissed at myself for listening to others. However it is a natural black “sand” product instead of it being painted like others. That is the reason for my purchase and I should’ve just stuck with gravel.

Great quality substrate. Rinse it really, really well and you will have ZERO cloudiness in your tank. I made sure to rinse this substrate until the water was almost clear. When I filled up my tank (slowly and with a water stream dampener i.e. a tupperware container under the water flow to prevent disturbing the substrate) I literally had zero cloudiness... just bubbles on the glass (picture was taken within an hour after filling the tank up for the first time). Plants have grown just fine with this substrate. I do not have anything else to compare it to, so I don't know if they are growing "better" than with regular pool filter sand... but they are growing just fine. I also just really like the dark, clean look of this. It does make algae and stuff show up more but it also makes it easy to see where to clean so I am fine with that.

I purchased this to put on top of my EcoComplete as I wanted to something a little finer for my Kuhlis. As many of the other reviewers have stated, this substrate is quite dusty and to wash well means you will lose some and it will take several rinsings. Yes, the grains are very small. More importantly, I have actually noticed the reds in some of my plants have become much more pronounced since putting this substrate in which makes me think that it may be a better source of iron for my plants. It has been perfect for my tanks and it has been really fun to watch the Kuhlis dig around.

Looks awesome and should last forever! this is tiny pieces of clay that hopefully will not turn to mud. it's really easy to get the plants to stay down when planting too.I do not have corydoras but I like watching my trumpet snails dive right in and leave trails. The only thing to consider is that if you REALLY want to clean it you will lose about 15 - 20% of the volume. I rinsed mine about 20 times until I felt that most of the dust was gone. this happens with a lot of fine substrate so I will not fault Seachem for that. Your water might be a bit muddy at first and easily disturbed but after a few weeks it will settle to the bottom much faster. I believe that since the clay is porous it becomes water logged and heavier. Could also be that there is beneficial bacteria and other things growing on each grain. Either way I highly recommend this stuff and I will use it in other tanks in the future.
