From the manufacturer

Our recommendation is to use a looped connection with eyed fenders. A looped connection with a fender eye allows a boater to use a lighter line, which most boaters find easier to work with while also making a stronger thicker connection to the fender eye. Utilizing the line’s splice, like our spliced lines here is the best practice. The general rule of thumb is to use the largest diameter line you can when hanging a boat fender. If the line is too small it can cut through a vinyl fender eye like a knife, and larger diameter lines create a stronger connection.

TYING A FENDER TO THE BOAT OR DOCK

Two Half-Hitch Knot illustration

Tying to Rail—Two Half-Hitches

The Two Half-Hitch is a common method for tying a fender line to a rail. The first part of the knot is a round turn, which controls the load and provides friction against the support. This allows you to make the line taught. The two half-hitches secure the line and keeps the line tight.

Tying to Rail—Clove Hitch

The second method for tying a fender line to a rail is the Clove Hitch. It's great for when you need to secure a rope quickly and it's adjustable without untying.

Cleat Hitch

Tying to Cleat—Cleat Hitch

The Cleat Hitch is a widely used for quickly tying a boat to a dock using a cleat. It's a quick and easy knot to tie and untie. As a bonus, it's a knot that ties neatly and can be adapted with extra loops.

These lines really look great and dress up my boat fenders. Really like that they match my dock lines. Okay, they are just fender lines, but why not look good! Have only used them for a couple of weeks, but the lines feel very durable.

These lines are marketed for use with boat fenders. However, these lines will be perfect when I raft up with other kayaks. This is a set of two and have an eye splice on one end.

We ordered SeaChoice navy fender lines (1/4" x 6') from iBoats and SeaChoice navy double-braid dock lines (3/8" x 15') from Harvard Marine because we couldn't get both sets of lines from the same vendor. Interestingly, the navy fender lines and the navy dock lines do not match in color! The navy fender lines are more of a dark grey with shades of blue. The navy dock lines are more of what you would consider navy blue. I'm not sure if this is a SeaChoice manufacturing issue, or if iBoats sent us the wrong color fender lines. Given that our new boat is both navy and grey, I think we'll keep them. We like the look and quality of the SeaChoice brand, but only giving 4 stars because of the mismatch in color.

LOVE these! I feel SO much more secure with my boat! I just wish they had them in smaller lengths. I use these for spring lines, but would like them smaller for tie downs. They are thick, and you will notice a difference if you are accustomed to 1/4 or 1/2 inch line. You'll feel like your boat isn't going anywhere.
