ensign morning glory vine flower seeds for planting a butterfly garden

Grow this specialty blend of Morning Glory flowers from freshly harvested Convolvulus tricolor flower seeds. Ensign Mixture is a vine with a compact growth habit. It's vines, unlike traditional Morning Glories, will only grow to a mature length of about 1 foot long. This makes them a perfect choice for hanging baskets, pots and containers. They also look great in window boxes, along borders, or directly in the flower bed as well. Because of their short growth habit, some even use it as an annual groundcover as well.

The flowers of Morning Glory, Ensign Mixture open up to a good 2 or 2.5 inches in diameter, exposing multicolored, saucer like petals. Each bloom is a unique combination of red, pink, white, blue and purple. The outer layer of each flower is the primary color, while the second and third layers are white and yellow as it nears the center. These colorful and cheery blooms will attract an array of beneficial insects to the garden, such as butterflies, bumblebees, hummingbirds and honeybees as well.

Morning Glory, Ensign Mixture is categorized as an annual flowering plant. It's leaves, flowers and short stems will grow quickly from fresh Convolvulus seeds. Once established, the plants will bloom profusely through the summer months, later dying with the first frost. Seeds can be collected at the end of the season, once the flowers have dried out. The seeds can sometimes fall to the bare ground beneath, just before the first frost, allowing these beautiful plants to regrow the following season.

sowing the seed

Sowing The Seed

You will notice that Morning Glory seeds consist of a hard outer shell. Before sowing these seeds, they should be prepped by scarification or soaking. Sometimes you can even consider both methods. Nick the seeds with sandpaper or a knife and soak in warm water, for 24 hours. If starting indoors, sow in peat pots, 6 to 8 weeks prior to the last frost. Place the seeds at a depth of 1/4" under topsoil. Transplant, or direct sow into the garden when the weather is warm and all danger of frost has passed.

growing conditions

Growing Conditions

Morning Glory plants will thrive in the heat of summer and prefer an area of full sunlight. Temperatures should be at least 70F or higher. The soil should be average to sandy, but also well drained. To increase drainage, we recommend adding a light compost to areas containing hard, compact soil. Water the seeds daily until germination has occurred, watering less frequently as time goes on.

germination and growth

Germination & Growth

Morning Glory seeds typically germinate within roughly 7 to 14 days after sowing. Ensign Mixture, unlike other traditional Morning Glory plants, will establish short, bushy like plants. They grow only to a mature height of roughly 1 foot tall and can be spaced about 12 inches apart from one another. The plants are excellent for borders, flower beds, in hanging baskets, pots & container, or window boxes as well.

We have planted these seeds in seed starter kits. Germination was almost 100%. I didn't even know there were non-vining Morning Glory, but it will be fun to see this different type of flower. The seeds are very clean and healthy looking. The packaging is like retail envelopes with excellent planting and care instructions. Seed Needs seems to really pay attention to the quality of their product and packaging. With the detailed instructions on the seed packets, they do all they can to ensure a good experience for their customers. Our plants are at the seedling stage, so can't comment, yet on how well they will bloom, but from the quality thus far, we are looking for good things.

I have small vines already and with our weather here in Texas, I'm sure I'll get flowers from them before it gets too cold. The original set of morning glories I planted struggled through our nearly record-breaking heat wave (and drought) this summer even though I watered them daily. I have a few flowers, but I'm hoping that with these seeds and the worst of our heat over with (still in the low 90s, but we haven't had a 100+ day for a few weeks now) that these will grow fast and flower so I can get naturally-seeded volunteers next year. Very fresh seeds considering how fast they sprouted!

Because I'm a total weirdo, I've already started to collect seeds for next summer. I've been happy with other seeds from Seed Needs, so I decided to try these. My other Seed Needs plants (Zinnias and Poppies) have done well this summer, and I love the abundance of seeds in the packets.I confess that I didn't realize these are quite different plants from the Heavenly Blue Morning Glories I have growing this summer. When I picked these, I thought they would be plants with long climbing vines, but they're not at all. I learned the truth from the Seed Needs website, which has a nice info page about these plants (the vines for these are only about 1 foot long... ah, well).I still have a lot to learn about outdoor gardening, and again, am happy for the effective and abundant seeds from Seed Needs.

Over the summer, we had some construction done and the area where my long-established morning glories had been growing was completely destroyed. I was really wanting to re-establish them, however, I couldn't find the seeds locally. I have used Seed Needs products before and was really excited that they had them. While I received these seeds a bit late in the season, I have started them in seedling containers under a grow light. I am looking forward to getting them out and seeing them in the garden next year. They just started peeking through the potting mix, and knowing this company, I have no worries at all about how well they'll do.The package contains approximately 200 seeds of English Blend Morning Glory (Convolvulus tricolor) and have a best by date of 12/2023.

I enjoy trying different flowering annuals every year and as such, I was pleasantly surprised that this is a "different morning glory". However, I felt that this was a case of needing a little "truth in advertising". Nowhere could I find (in the Amazon add) that this was not a standard vine type of morning glory. I had to receive the seed packet before I had any idea that this was not a vine as I may have planned on. I must admit that this was a tricky way of making me look up the supplier's web site for more information -which incidentally, is a nice website, but I could have been quite upset if I had simply stored the seeds until spring planting.
