The SeeStar S50 is a very intriguing device. Incredibly portable with a quick setup once you learn how to level and calibrate it. A self-leveling tripod head is HIGHLY recommended as it will make leveling this thing much easier (not to say that leveling or calibrating it without one is complicated). Search Amazon for ASIN: B0978HG6RG. I highly recommend this variation.I also recommend a full-sized, heavy-duty carbon fiber tripod as the S50 will be top-heavy. Using the S50 with any noticeable wind will produce poor results, if it's even able to lock and track an object at all. As with any telescope, the mount is extremely important. The included tripod works, but it is limited in where and when it can be used, especially if there is wind and you opt to place it on a not-so-stable table. As mentioned, use a heavier tripod if you can, which also allows you to use additional weights to fully stabilize your platform. I found these quirks when trying to get it properly calibrated and tracking properly. I moved up from the included tripod to a carbon fiber travel tripod only to find the same issues. I moved up to a full-sized carbon fiber tripod, and it immediately locked in on the target, even with some wind.Shooting in a heavily light polluted city off of a condo balcony with pathway and outdoor building lighting right below me, I was quite surprised by the quality of the shots I was able to capture of the Orion Nebula. It compared well to images captured with larger, more traditional scopes costing upwards of $3000. Moon views are incredible, while planetary objects are nearly impossible to capture, although you can capture small images of Jupiter and can slightly make out the rings of Saturn, but it's tiny (it was not designed for planetary viewing). The battery lasts a few hours, but you can easily use external power to keep it powered up.Things I didn't like:1. No ability to use external storage.2. Lack of an SD card slot3. Lack of the ability to upgrade storage manually.4. The Android App can be a little finicky when connecting to the internet via your WiFi. iOS had zero issues and always reconnected. I ran both side-by-side.For the price, I highly recommend it, but if you are looking for a wider field of view, opt for the cheaper SeeStar S30.For example, the Orion Nebula barely fits in a single frame using the S50, the S30 would capture it in it's entirety. The S50 is definitely the best in its class among smart telescopes, while the more expensive brands have some advantages and additional features, the S50 still rivals them in terms of image quality and processing.YMMV

This is an excellent scope which I can control off my cell or my Ipad 2. It's easy too use and takes Excellent photos. The installed battery handles about 6-7 hours before it needs a charge.

It may or may not connect to your phone. I read more reviews after purchasing mine and apparently this is a common problem with no solution. Mine keeps saying the “Wi-Fi is abnormal” and instructing me to shut it down. I followed the instructions and it was new out of the box. Their customer service has been impossible to work with. I basically have an expensive paper weight. I just want to return the thing for a refund and they are unresponsive.I’ve seen that other people get good images but I’ve had such a bad experience that at this point I wouldn’t want it even if it started working. I feel totally taken advantage of.

When we first received this, it worked well. We got some great photos but couldn’t really see/get a good photo of solar systems. We have had it almost a year now and it has stopped working. It will not find a planet. It says the view is blocked even though there is nothing around it. We are looking into returning it and searching for a better, different one. I would not recommend buying this.

Set up took 10 minutes or so and away we went.. within the first hour we’d managed to create what we think is an amazing image of the Orion Nebula.. highly recommend this mini telescope.. super easy to set up and use for complete novices and has some great functions.
