Part of me wishes I saw reviews before I bought because I saw the 2nd handle in the photos and assumed I'd get it along with the main product. Nope. Other than that seems a good quality. Would have rated lower but actually works fast and better than my older ones

Great design and ergonomics. The open weave of the blades mean they don't clog up. Even if there is some eventual build up, a quick hit with a steel wire brush displaces the debris. Good for wood, plastics and soft metals.

Although the tool came late (didn't realize it was coming direct from Japan) it is really the tool to go to for ease of material removal, with a nice finish that requires minimal cleanup with either a scraper or sandpaper. I thought I was going to loose an order over it's lateness, but knowing my customer I made the part in two days and presented it with the option to cancel anyway. Seeing how nicely the product turned out in a short time the customer accepted:) all's well...

I have an old style shinto rasp with the in-line handle and I love it, so when I saw this new style I decided to pick one up and I do not regret it one bit. If you use a traditional rasp for woodworking you will absolutely love this although it does NOT do inside curves - it will not replace a half-round or rat-tail rasp or file. It can remove a lot of material and the finer side leaves a decent finish so you can go straight to 240 grit sandpaper (depending on the wood). Every woodworker should have one of these in the shop.

I have put about 50 hours or so into using this tool.I used this tool to shape multiple baltic birch / fiberglass longboard skateboard decks as well as some larger solid wood items - it takes off a ton of material in a short period of time, even on the fine side.I find that softwood doesn't do too well with the coarse side - the teeth tear the wood pretty badly and the workpiece can become fiberous. Likewise, plywood doesn't like the coarse side very much either. I imagine this is more for hardwood specifically. This isn't a big deal because the fine side works so quickly on softwood and plywood that you don't even need the coarse side. Only posting this paragraph to help people use this amazing tool properly.I haven't detected any dulling yet, but I'd expect the lifespan to be similar to using a hacksaw blade on wood (a long time)! I imagine at its dullest it would still be faster than a regular rasp.Just to be clear - this is more of a shaping tool than a finishing tool. If you want to work on a surfboard or longboard project, or any sort of project involving a bunch of shaping of larger items, this is for you.

The Shinto rasp is an important part of my woodworking process. It allows you to take squared off boards and round them over very efficiently. This is a rough cut tool for making the initial shape, and it excels at that. Finer rasps, scrapers, and sandpaper can all used to refine the rough surface it leaves. The Japanese packaging of my first Shito rasp included a simple tutorial. It was a series of line drawings that really helped show the range of the tool. This rasp was packaged nicer, and includes little sheet with a nice, clear expiration of how to change the blade. However, there is no instruction for how to use the tool. It is a shame the english packaging did not also include a copy of the original tutorial drawings.

Got this to use in shaping handles. Have not had a chance to do that yet but spent the afternoon cleaning up the edge of a longboard made of Pecan. I started with the coarse side and quickly switched to the shooting side, it is plenty sharp and works well on the hard wood.Get the one with the handle, it is a great way to hold onto this thing and the off set it provides gives both leverage and control.I was able to get the edges square in no time and used it to square off the back end of the board, the end grain.I love this thing and look forward to using it again!

My oak front door expanded a bit in the winter weather and was sticking. I initially bought some cheap rasp saws because I thought it was a small one off job. They were rubbish. Blunted quite quickly. Thought I’d try the more expensive Shinto planner rasp saw and found it money worth spent. The position of the handle was perfect for applying pressure when trying to remove wood from the underside of a front door. Cheap rasp saws are in the bin.

What a great tool! I wish I had bought this along time ago. It’s very well made and very easy to control. The course side will remove wood at a very fast rate and the fine side can be used to get a pretty smooth finish if you take light strokes. The pointed tip makes it easy to shape wood as you wish.

I use this tool to shape the neck on cigar box guitars and canjos that I make. Don't know how I ever got along without it before I bought it. It is very controllable and removes wood FAST. If you are doing any shaping on your wood projects you must own this tool. Did I mention that it removes wood quickly? Very controllable to make whatever shape you're trying to achieve . Saves time and makes my project so much more enjoyable. I also own the 9-inch version and recommend both to anyone working or shaping wood.
