So much larger than I expected and sharper than it needs to be. Given how impulsive and silly our little ones can get, I didn’t feel comfortable leaving this sharp metal spike off skate key (ice pick basically) in either of their hockey bags. That makes them somewhat unusable for our purposes. They do come with a small clear plastic tube cover which is intended to cover the sharp metal ice pick for safety but it doesn’t stay on for even 10 seconds, so again defeats the purpose. If you’re a grown adult who can be trusted carrying around a sharp metal spike it might not be any issue to you. But doesn’t fit the need for our family.

My daughter uses these for her figure skates. She has one of the metal ones but it hurt her hand and fingers so much. This one is much easier on her. It is very sturdy.

If you want a lace tightener as I did, that is longer than most and whose metal tip is not flat but a bit pointed, then this is the one for you. It's about 8" long versus most at 3.43". Ant the tip is a bit pointed so it's unlikely to get stuck on the lace as it easily goes under the lace, not against it. Also price is great - you get 2 for the price of one without any loss of quality.

My husband said the lace tightener is helpful to get my 4 year old’s hockey skate laces tight. The first couple of lessons my son was wobbly on his skates and fell over a lot. I just assumed it was because he had never skated before, but now with tight laces he can stay up! I guess my grip strength wasn’t strong enough to tighten the skates properly. I feel bad that I didn’t buy one of these sooner, my poor son trying to skate with loose skates was not safe. So, I highly recommend a lace tightener for ice skates. This one is really big, but my husband says it was the perfect size for his hands. He has much larger hands than me (wife). Even with my small hands it was hard to fit my fingers between the laces near the toes to tighten them. This product solves that problem.

My biggest concern is th plastic heat formed handle is a little rough and the end of the round steel hook Is cut square, with no rounding of the edge. But this 4 pack is a lot more reasonable for the price and it gets the job done just as well.

My son just started playing ice hockey and was having issues tightening his skates on his own. These worked perfectly for him. He can now tighten his skates on his own, and get them right where he needs them without any help from us. Wish we would have known about these the first 4 months he was playing.
