This well-crafted siding installation tool efficiently accomplishes its intended purpose, making it an excellent solution for installing long clapboard pieces single-handedly. When used with 5.25" Hardiplank clapboards, the gauge ensures a 4" reveal between successive courses. However, it's important to note that if you're working with wider clapboards (around 6" size commonly found at Home Depot), you'll require an alternative gauge for achieving the desired 4" reveal. This tool seems specifically designed for the 5.25" Hardiplank. The tool functions primarily as a gauge, providing consistent reveals for each course, but it's important to understand that it doesn't offer adjustable settings. Nonetheless, I discovered some workarounds to adjust my courses when needed. Essentially, it serves as a hanger, acting as an affordable extra pair of hands.During usage, I gradually learned not to fully nail the next clapboard in place before releasing the gauge from the previous course. Instead, I found it more effective to secure the clapboard with a few nails, leaving them protruding about 3/4 inch, and then loosen the gauges. It can be a bit challenging initially, but with practice, it becomes easier to master. (Please note that I used a hammer rather than a nail gun. While hand-nailing Hardiplank is feasible, it's advisable to use high-quality nails.) The tool performs as intended, and its reasonable price is a pleasant surprise in today's market.
