There are more advantages to using inserted carbide cutters than higher surface speed. The mounting base on the holder is machined level and the cutting angles are all formed on the insert. The main variable for the operator to set is cutting height, which on a lathe determines the front rake and relief angles. A longer lasting cutting edge is also a desirable feature.
