The Skytech AFVK-SP-MH/L SPLIT electronic safety pilot system was developed to provide safe, reliable, user-friendly control for gas heating appliances. These intermittent pilot ignition (IPI) gas valve kits are set up for natural gas (NG) only and are designed to be used with 18 to 30-inch gas log sets. Optional propane (LP) gas conversions kits LPK-18 or LPK-24 are available. The AFVK-SP-MH/L SPLIT features a manual Hi/Lo spark to pilot gas valve and a flame modulating remote control with On/Off/Hi/Lo infinite flame adjustment and On/Off continuous pilot. This gas log safety pilot is divided into two sections, the gas valve box and the switch box. Both boxes are pre-assembled and ready to install. With each box on separate sides of the gas log burner pan it enables the log set to be centered inside the fireplace. The valve box contains gas valve and pilot assembly and the switch box contains an electronic module and battery back. Both boxes are joined together with a hi-tempered wiring harness. Includes valve box, switch box (battery pack, module and switch), installation instructions, RS-1A heat shield, transmitter, damper clamp, AA batteries, 12v battery, and flex connecter.

It was dead on arrival. Easy installation, but no spark. Tried to pair the remote but no beep when pressing the pairing button. Checked batteries and all were good. Called help line and talked to a very nice rep. But we couldn’t come up with a fix I would have liked to fix it but the only solution offered was a return.

Out of the box it didn’t work. I had to take apart the motor that runs the high/low valve and align the gears so they weren’t bound up. The units get very hot and really need some reflective insulation. The batteries get hotter than recommend by the manufacturer. I put some thin reflective insulation on both the boxes and they barely feel warm now.A year later the remote stopped working. A replacement is 100$!!!!??? Once I get some time I’m going to see if I can fix it. It’s incredibly cheap technology, it’s probably a 5$ remote. You can’t adjust the flame without the remote which is also ridiculous. I might add a switch to do so but should be standard.I tried contacting the company, no word back. They obviously don’t care about their poor product or the people who made the mistake of buying them. If you want to pay an absorbent price for little to no engineering, technology or customer service I hope you enjoy repairing electronics

Works really well. A little complicated to set up, and wish the box wasn't so big that it has to be seen next to the logs, but it does the job and being able to turn the logs on and off from across the room while sitting in my recliner is sweet. I'll probably throw an extra decorative log on top of the box to disguise it.The minuses? The "learn" button for marrying the remote with the control box should be on the battery box and not hidden inside the control box which is next to impossible to access once the logs and the grate and the gas lines are in place. I am hoping I don't have to futz with the valve box every time I replace the batteries. I gave this product a one star deduction for the price and the location of the learn button. Also, be aware that if your log set is less than ~65,000BTU that you will have a very small range of adjustment for the flame (was told this when I called the support line, which were helpful with a couple of questions. I wish there was something of a "gain" control to make it work better with lower BTU log sets). Since my log set is only 55,000BTU, the flame range is almost negligible. So keep this in mind, as a simple on/off control which is less expensive might be the better buy. I'm keeping this valve just because I might want to regulate the flame in the future, although the adjustment will be small. Another issue is that my fireplace would only support an 18" log set and even then, the room in the fireplace is limited to place the valve box and thus mine sits less than the two inches from the grate legs suggested by the instructions; the valve sometimes overheats the 130-degree limit (which seems rather low for a fireplace valve that has to sit somewhere IN the firebox .. I can't imagine how this will be affected by a much higher BTU log than mine) and shuts off and emits a constant four beeps. I was able to fix this by wrapping three sides of the box with an aluminized heat barrier adhesive fabric (the kind that you buy in an auto parts store to protect electronics under the hood from exhaust heat -- it is also sold here on Amazon) which is supposed to protect electronics for up to 2000-degree radiant heat. That seems to have stopped the shutting off and I believe as much heat was coming from the outer wall of the firebox as it was from the gas logs itself.

I spent a very long time trying to find a system that would keep my wife from blowing up the house when lighting the fireplace. She has terrified me a few times when the match that she tossed into the fireplace went out without igniting the logs. This was fairly easy to install. It also has some great safety features that are built in. I really like the one button start up.I added a few pictures that may help with installation. The unit is inside the fireplace, but is not really feeling the heat. Just don't close the fireplace doors because that could cause the unit to be exposed to more heat then it is designed for.

This worked perfect and I like the fact that there is no standing pilot light needed... Thanks you for a quick turnaround.

The first unit sent was defective, and I had to return it. Smarthome was courteous and replaced it at no cost in under one week. No problem after that, and unit works great!
