The steel self-drilling screw with zinc plating has a wafer head and a star drive. Steel is often used in applications where strength is the primary consideration. The zinc plating offers corrosion resistance and has a reflective appearance. The wafer head has a flat top, a 70-degree cone-shaped bearing surface, and a small slope between the top and the bearing surface that helps create a flush fit. The star drive, also called a Torx drive, has a six-pointed indentation that provides a large contact area for the driver, resisting slippage better than a Phillips or slotted drive. A star drive requires use of a Torx driver for installation and removal.

Self-drilling screws, a type of self-tapping screw, are threaded fasteners that drill their own hole and thread it as they are installed. Usually only recommended for use with metal, self-drilling screws are available with wings that enable use when fastening wood to metal. The drill point length should be long enough to penetrate both materials being fastened before the threading portion reaches the material.

Hex is smaller than I had hoped. Strips easily. Not what I had hoped.

The price was ok and they are strong, but the design doesn’t work for self-tapping wood-on-metal. Tek screws like this, while pricier, have “wings” on the drilling tip (see photos) that break off after drilling through the wood and hit metal, preventing the threads from biting into the wood thus allowing the self-tapping tip to drill freely through the metal you are mounting to. These screws do not. I was able to make these work only by pre-drilling the holes through both the wood and metal, defeating the purpose of self-tapping screws.

I used these on 14 gauge steel tube and about every third one of these had the tip break off, making it useless. I'm not a big metal guy, so maybe this is normal? When they worked, they worked really well! And if it weren't for the star drive, I probably would have thrown the whole bag in the trash! If you don't use a lot of self-tappers, or you need them for a lighter gauge sheet metal, these are fine, just buy more than you need!

Absolute junk. I've just gone through 30 screws to achieve 8 fastened points. Self drilling function isn't working in cold rolled steel. Either they just spin or the TORX starts stripping out. Now job is held up.

I used these to install new 5/8" marine grade plywood to my snowmobile trailer. It uses a T20 bit. Worked great! My advice, pre-drill the wood only and install.
