I have a lot of SmallRig products and this one has the same quality, machining, and fit and finish that I have come to expect from them all at a reasonable price.Super handy for mounting GoPros, lights, mics, recorders, etc. to my rig and arms for quick switching! These function smoothly as well.Secure feel to anything I have mounted on them and I would hang from them as well. The only thing I would change is the packaging. I'm not complaining, but the presentation and packaging is a little much. Honestly, I would be happy if these mounts just came in a little bag. That goes for all manufacturers as well.

Sometimes you need an extra cold shoe where there isn't one and this does just that. Good quality support from a trusted manufacturer.

Recomendable.

This SmallRrig HawkLock allows you to put a cold shoe wherever there is a quarter inch British Standard Whitworth tapped hole. It comes in two parts - the half that you screw to the hole and the part with the cold shoe on it.To separate the two halves, you press a button which raises and disengages the locking bars on the underside of it and when you insert it, you press the button again. It is designed so that you can insert the cold shoe unit into either end of the base unit so you can change orientation very quickly and easily. The base unit has the quarter inch BSW screw on it and also a couple of sprung locating pins although they will retract all of the way if you are screwing it into something that doesn't use them. The upper unit with the cold shoe on it has a plastic base to the cold shoe so that if you are putting a flash unit on there that uses a hot shoe, it will not short out. This is a useful little adaptor that adds a cold shoe to a camera cage or a magic clamp if you want to use it for a flash unit or a small lighting unit that uses a cold shoe.

First of all let me put in a good word for the packaging. This small piece of hardware came wrapped in brown padded paper inside an appropriately sized, unbleached cardboard box. In other words, minimalist and sustainable. I'd love to see more manufacturers do this, because no matter how great the presentation is, that box is going straight in the trash (or in this case, the recycle bin). It also shipped with a nice allen key so I didn't have to go looking for one in order to attach the cold shoe to my cage. Now for my impression of the product itself. I love that there's a plastic pad inside the cold shoe. This prevents scratching by speedlight contacts, and more importantly, prevents the speedlight from triggering by shorting out on a metal surface. However, I should also mention that this cold shoe is not really all that useful for speedlights, as you'd be hard-pressed to operate a camera with the speedlight jutting out from the side. This is likely why the product description only mentions video lights and microphones.Sadly, it also has limited use (as far as I can tell) for video lights and microphones for the simple reason that it only really fits on either side of the SmallRig cage (at least on my Fuji X-T5 model). It's got very handy retractable pins on either side of the center screw that fit holes on my cage to prevent the cold shoe from rotating. There's a similar set of holes in the center on top of the cage, but sadly the screw hole there is too wide for this cold shoe (what's with the inconsistent hole diameters, SmallRig?) Not really the fault of this cold shoe, but since it's made by the same company I wonder why they can't make something that fits more places on the cage. And yes, the pins *are* retractable, so there are a few other places you can mount it (such as on the top right), but then you kind of lose the anti-rotate thing.I can see mounting a mono boom mic on either side of the cage, but a stereo mic would favor one channel, and in any case not be centered on the subject. An LED video light or monitor might be a better use for it, although that would likely mean mounting it vertically, since most of these have their mounting hardware on the bottom (long edge) of the device. Those gripes aside, the accessory itself is very sturdy, and the lock feels very solid so I wouldn't worry about it slipping (as long as you have whatever you connect securely fastened to the top slide). I just wish SmallRig would have better compatibility between the holes on their cages and their accessories.I also recognize that there may be uses for mounting video equipment on the side of the cage that I have not thought of, so I'm keeping an open mind about that.

Update and Upgrade:I am upgrading my review of the Smallrig HawkLock QR Cold Shoe for a couple of reasons. One, after the initial review was published, I heard from Smallrig. They were concerned about my experience with the Cold shoe and were interested in the usage that resulted in my impressions. Simply put, they are a top-notch company that have genuine concern for the satisfaction of their users. Secondly, it was not my intent to create the impression that the QR Cold Shoe may pose a hazard to attached equipment; it doesn't. It just takes some finesse and a little getting used to when disengaging an attached device. In the end, it's a versatile little accessory.*********As is typically the case with Smallrig, they’ve released another handy and innovative little accessory, one that utilizes their new HawkLock system, a Quick Release Cold Shoe. You’ve probably never even realized you needed one till now.The tiny, easy to lose track of QR Cold Shoe is in the form of an aluminum ingot, and built like a tank; nonetheless, it doesn’t weigh much more than a handful of feathers. The mount incorporates two registration pins, one on each side of the mounting screw. The pins are spring-loaded, so if there’s nothing for them to fall into, they will retract into the base as the mounting screw is tightened. It has, as Smallrig points out, silicone padding on the platform of the cold shoe to protect the finish of whatever is slid into it; overall, the finish on the cold shoe mount itself is a stunning gun metal gray.As prior reviewers have pointed out, what one assumes to be dual-directional can be mis-leading, as assumptions very often are. In this case, what is meant by dual directional is that the QR plate can be inserted from either side, however it must then be removed from that same side; it won’t slide in one side then out the other. You insert it in one direction, and remove it from the other. My hands are on the large side, so I found the QR Cold Shoe Mount awkward to handle both due to its diminutive size, but also as a consequence of its design; in order to remove the QR Plate from the base, it’s necessary to use opposing forces. By design, the QR plate must be removed in the opposite direction in which it was inserted, which in turn is the opposite direction that the HawkLock QR button is being pushed to release it. You’re pushing a relatively firm, spring-loaded button in one direction while trying to remove the plate and its attachment in the opposite direction. In the end, if these two opposing forces are not delicately balanced, while at the same time handling an attached device, something could get broken or snap off. I’m very curious to know Smallrig’s thinking on this queer design decision; the logic escapes me. But there you go.The build of the HawkLock QR Cold Shoe Mount, in all respects, is first rate. But the odd functional design shortcoming, especially coming from Smallrig, is so confounding that I question myself; am I missing something? Or is just a miss on Smallrig’s part?

Another great product from Smallrig. This cold shoe comes handy with my DJI action cage by adding a video light source. I am able to add and remove the video light quickly without any issues. Quality is great and feels good. Price is good for this item.

SmallRig has been changing the game for awhile now. The business model is simple: offer quality gear at a smaller price. This may seem expensive for such as small part, but it’s less than most of it’s competition and this is just built very well and functions smoothly. But with confidence.

Smallrig always comes up with interesting accessories for video camera rigs, and this is no different. I've had many times where I have to mount a cold shoe item (microphone, light, etc) and this one makes it quick and easy to add and remove those accessories. No complaints in terms of quality as the HawkLock system is solid. Get it!
