The original OEM switch is closed when the transmission is in neutral. This switch is closed when the transmission is in any gear and is open when the transmission is in neutral. The connector does not match the OEM switch either, as you can see in the picture (the OEM switch is brown- this one is grey and keyed differently). In order to make this work on the 2011 Subaru Outback 6MT you need a relay to convert the ON/OFF condition of the switch.A side note: a defective neutral switch will generate a P0851 or P0852 code and it will deactivate the hill holder and possibly the cruise control (when shorted). This condition will also make the “BRAKE” light in the dashboard to blink continuously. Once the neutral switch is replaced with one working correctly, the break light will go off and the hill holder and cruise control will start working again.

Apparently, there is an updated part where the button is metal. It's my understanding that the plastic button tends to wear down when the intended transmission part is in contact with this switch. Not sure weather that's in gear or out of gear when it's in strong contact. But over time it'll no longer press enough to operate as usual because the part that contacts it is rotating. Mine seems to be wearing faster than usual due to failing input shaft bearings allowing the contacting part to both contact more and less depending on its current fluctuating position. If your bearings are all good it'll last another 60,000 to 100,000 miles. If not, much less.

Purchased hoping to correct neutral safety switch cel. I accidentally installed on the other sensor (had to splice connector from previous unit) the purchased second and all is.well. Sensor is correction for either. Lucky me guess

My 2003 Subaru Baja base model has not had working reverse lights since i purchased it. It was on the list of things to repair. Did my research and found this should be the one to fix it.This nailed it perfectly. Removed my old broken Switch, cleaned the area, and directly plug and play popped this into the side of my transmission, ran the wire along the top and plugged it in.Reverse lights work like a charm. Can confirm fitment on a 2003 Subaru Baja Base model manual transmission. Hope this helps someone!

Exactly what I needed for my 2002 Forester. Replaced in myself in about 20 minutes. Comes with the metal washer that goes underneath. Relieved that my reverse lights are working properly now!
