I have 3 pin vises that I thought were very good, the Tamya I still like very much but this starrett is truly a joy to hold and use, the smooth as silk movement of the chuck, the tightening to zero gap of the jaws , the precise knurling on the handle, make you feel as if you're holding a work of art in your hand.

I made-do with a typical cheap one that I got from a. big online hobby tool catalog outfit. It was fine for larger bits, but just didn’t tightly hold bits #76 and smaller. This one truly closes down to zero, so it will hold a #80 bit securely.I also find the design of the handle to be better- larger knurling on the handle, and it is easier to hold and work with just my thumb and forefinger.I should have bought this long ago….!

Super pleased with this pin vise. I had a need for a pin vise that would hold a bit down in the . My late father-in-law was a machinist and since he had only daughters I inherited all his tools, which were predominantly Starrett. Unfortunately, he did not have any pin vises, but when I saw that Starrett made one in the size I wanted, I jumped on it. This tool (made in USA) is just a work of art and operates flawlessly. Go read reviews of the pin vises made elsewhere and you will see what I mean. My wife just rolled her eyes when I showed off my new toy, but I know her dad would have been pleased.

Quality made, accurate and concentric, unlike most of the cheap ones you see advertised. Made for hand use only, unfortunately the knurling makes it impractical to use as a pin chuck in a larger chuck, such as on a mill or drill press.

If you need a pin vise just buy this and put it to work. It’s everything a Starrett tool is supposed to be. Everything has excellent fit and finish and performs very well. It runs true with strong holding force with drills as well as part holding. My favorite thing about these are how long pieces of stock can pass completely through the handle. It’s not a feature you’re likely to use every day, but it’s great when you need it.Some of the comments indicate a rough opening/closing action and incorrectly believe it is due to the threads. It’s actually the collet against the inside of the nose they’re feeling. Put a drop of oil on it. These things sit upright in boxes inside hot warehouses for many years. The small amount of oil that’s on them from the factory evaporated long ago.

Great grip, ideal size for intricate manipulation. I use it for my work; isolating microscopic particles.

This is a great pin vise that reliably hold small bits like a #80. Definitely worth the cost.

The pin vice's jaws close all the way, making it useful for bits with very small shaft diameters. I've had other pin vices that do not grip 0.8 diameter bits. This one does, very securely. The pin vice is hollow all the way through, so the bit can be removed by loosening the jaws and letting it slide out the back. It's a bit pricey, but well made so it's worth it.

Recently used it to hold a sewing needle to do some fine work. When driving it forward, along the axis of the tool, it would sometimes let the needle slip in. Could use a little more holding force. Aside form that, the knurling is nice. It is a very small tool.

This is my first experience with a pin vise so I have nothing to compare it to, but this thing seems really high quality and highly precise. I just used it to hold the post of an earring setting while i cut notches into the prongs with a dremel tool. It held them securely and prevented them from spinning without causing any damage to the soft gold posts. Couldn't be happier with this purchase. I'm glad I spent the few extra bucks to get this one instead of a cheap generic which may have been of questionable quality.

This little pin vise is for bits from 61 to 80. I tried a number 80 in it and the little vise holds it securely. I tried it with some of the larger numbered bits to see the maximum it will hold. It will actually hold a number 56. Of course Starrett makes 162B and 162C vises for larger sizes. The little vise is very well made, I assume made in the USA. The handle and chuck are knurled for easy handling and it's very well done - shows quality. It is small. It's about 3 inches long and the handle about 3/16" in diameter. You could put a microdrill in this pin vise and then put the pin vise in a regular drill chuck though this is not the intent and would very likely result in a broken bit. These little bits are really intended to be used in a pin vise or one of the little push drills made for this. For those who appreciate fine tools, it's a beautiful little device.
