Tried using it on SATA And USB. It Works Only When It Feels Like It. And If It Works You Need To Wait for it to do what you want. I Ended up buying a new one from someone else. Wish I Could Get My Money Back.

The power supply failed on the first time. Amazon send me a new one kit. Twice the speed of my 8 years old Voyager NewTech. Small footstep, easy to move in a pack sack. The switch is a little bit stiff.

Great and comes with a good selection of cables.I used it to expand storage on my Reolink NVR via the eSata connection. Problem is, if there is a power cut, it does not turn back on automatically.

The item came on time, I bought this docking station after I returned my previous docking station, also from StarTech, due to the fact that it didn't recognize my Seagate IronWolf 8TB. Before I purchased the docking station, I contacted StarTech about recognition of my HDD. Their answer was that so long that the HDD doesn't ask for more than 2A it will be recognized. The reason I bought this unit is because it has eSATA besides the USB. So I will have alternative in case I will need it. Problem is that not all the time it recognizes my HDD on first try (when eSATA is the connection). If it doesn't, I close the docking station until I hear that the disk stopped spinning and then turn it again. It is recognized by then. Using the USB, it recognizes on first try of turning on. didn't see much difference in reading/writing speeds between the two types of connections. Altogether, if it will be like my old docking station which is StarTech USB+eSATA, it is good product to have.

The SDOCKU313E is advertised by Startech as utilizing the ASMedia ASM235CM (USB3.2 Gen2x1 to SATA) however the unit I received uses an older ASMedia ASM1351 controller (USB3.1 Gen2 to SATA). Shipped and sold by Amazon in 2020. Now, USB 3.1 devices can be as fast as USB 3.2 devices but they are not guaranteed to meet the same specifications. This dock does not appear to natively support TRIM. lsusb lists this device as bInterfaceProtocol = 98 and Driver=uas, which verifies that UASP can be used. SMART seems to work fine. This unit also uses a ASM1456 SATA 6 Mux/Demux switch. The PCB is labeled 2018SUS31_MAIN_R1.0.The SDOCKU313E advertises it can operate at Full Speed USB 1.0 (12Mbps), High Speed USB 2.0 (480Mbps), SuperSpeed (5Gbps), and at SuperSpeed+ (10Gbps). Having 10Gbps capability is a benefit over 5Gbps because 5Gbps only has an effective throughput of 500 MB/s and 10Gbps has an effective throughput of 1200 GB/s. SATA III has an effective throughput of 600 MB/s and can saturate 5Gbps.The included USB 3.0 A to B and A to C cables oddly aren't Startech branded. The USB A to B only weighs 1.50 oz, with a diameter of 4.9 mm. A of the same length weighs 1.85 oz, with a diameter of 5.5 mm, implying better conductors and shielding in the Startech branded cables. According to the Startech website, both USB cables are only rated to 5 Gbps. If you are wanting to connect this dock to a USB C or Thunderbolt port, I would recommend the or to ensure the best performance from this dock. I think it is quite sad that Startech includes unbranded SuperSpeed Gen 1 (5Gbits) cables on this supposed 10GBps dock.Technical specs aside, the manufacturer decided to use a glossy plastic finish on the top of the unit. It looks terrible and isn't practical. Gloss doesn't make any sense as it attracts fingerprints and more importantly deep scratches from inserting and removing drives. Because it is glossy, it ships with wasteful protective plastic as well. They should've just specified a matte finish like the rest of the surfaces on this unit.Overall, I am disappointed and I would avoid this dock and purchase the (which I verified uses the advertised ASM1352R controller) or a dock from another brand. You can also try your luck with the , which is much cheaper and doesn't have the ASM1456 mux/demux slowing things down or eSATA port.I will be contacting Startech support about the issue. If anything good comes out of the experience, I will update this review. Until then, you might stay away from this one.

Firstly, It's a serviceable dock but there's either an issue with the included power supply not actually delivering 24W or the units need more than 24W to function.I've had problems with this and other StarTech docks where during extended usage they would attempt to draw too much power at some point and shut down - a workaround is to use a 2.5A or 3A 12V power supply (I grabbed a 12V 3A from an unused external HDD enclosure). In any case the USB-to-SATA bridge they use seems to be fairly well supported. and it works under both Windows and Linux. smartctl was able to interact with drives when using `-d sat`. It can be used to pass a drive to Hyper-V.I finally got around to some mild endurance testing. Using that 12V 3A power supply I had no problems doing a complete format of a 4TB drive - no disconnects and no errors for hours of sustained activity.

I use the dock with iMac 2017 (latest macOS). When using the USB-C connection, file copying stops after few minutes with error 36. It works okay with USB-A cable, but the speed is not too great.

I use this hard drive dock with a 1TB hard disk drive onto which I back up my entire system plus data once each week. Normally, the drive is turned off. When I turn it on to perform the back up and rescan my drives, it comes up with no problem and performs exactly as expected. I like the fact that it offers not only USB access but also SATA, which is the connection I use.

This is so great. I used this with migration assistant.I think it goes much faster when you copy from an SSD to an SSD which is what I did but using the USB C cable connected to a 2017-27 inch iMac it copied over 300GB in 30 minutes. I tested this with a laptop hard drive and a 3.5 larger drive that came from the old Mac Pro.

Just recently installed an ASROCK SuperCarrier motherboard and wanted a fast dock for backing up data. This dock came with all the needed cables and AC plug adapters. It easily plugged into the Thunderbolt 3 ports on the motherboard. Luckily my desk configuration allowed the short 3 foot long cable to reach the desktop ports. Did a few backup tests and very pleased with the performance. Unit looks like a well constructed durable backup dock and came with a factory two year warranty. using with Win10 64 bit 1703 Creators Build. Highly recommended.
