I actually got this to use with masonry line string. Regardless of what you use this for (kites, etc.), it will work pretty much the same. This unreels and reels quite smoothly and effortlessly. It is pretty comfortable to hold, but it has 2 major drawbacks.One is there is no brake! That is a huge problem. There is no way to stop the string from unwinding except to grab the winder with your other hand. Very awkward and not very safe. There should be a brake on the reel so you can slow the string from unwinding for more control, and to stop it completely when needed. It says there is a safety lock, but If there is a brake/lock, I couldn't find it!The second problem is rewinding the line. There is a metal piece with a round hole that is supposed to guide the line back onto the reel, but it doesn't work well. Every time I rewound the line, it missed the reel at some point and fell over the side. You had to stop and pull the string loose, then start again. This could be prevented if the winder had a tensioner to slow it down. The string just gets too loose with no tension and drapes over the side instead of feeding onto the reel.This would be a 4-5 star item if there was some way to tension the line. If using for a kite, I would imagine the line would just unreel too fast, and you would never get any tension on the string to allow the kite to catch the wind. IMO this is a very poor design. They include a storage bag, but it is basically made of a thin,cheap plastic that I think will tear quite easily, especially after it ages or sits in the sun and gets brittle.

Got this for spring weather with my kite, but have had issues.The string tangles extremely easily and winds up creating loops around the dispenser if you allow any slack on the line. This turns into a giant pain to untangel.I like that it comes with a retention hook pre attached, and the locking area for the winding knob is a good feature. Wish the grip as a bit larger for adult hands, but I understand this is probably intended for kids.

The eyelet that the spool of string goes thru is just metal and doesn't have a plastic rounded insert to lessen any friction.The connection to the kite hook end is one loop versus a double loop to distribute the wear, so I had to disconnect and redo that to be more robust. But I don't have a fix for the eyelet issue.
