The Journey to Perfecting Heavy-Duty Stud Shoes for 2x Studs and DOUBLE 2x Studs

For years, we’ve specialized in metal product development, building a loyal customer base along the way. One day, an old friend named Eric reached out to us with a pressing issue. He had been drilling and notching wood studs to accommodate plumbing, heating, and other pipes, reinforcing them with conventional nail plates. However, after his work was inspected, he was informed that his methods didn’t meet code requirements. The protection plates he used were inadequate, posing risks to the safety of the building.

Eric asked if we had any solutions to address his concerns. Inspired by his email, our R&D team dove into the IBC and IRC code standards to better understand the requirements. We sketched out ideas for a new product that could offer better reinforcement. However, our first batch revealed sharp edges and burrs around the holes, which not only posed a danger to hands but also to the plumbing and electrical wiring.

Working closely with our shop technicians, we brainstormed solutions. After five rounds of adjustmentstweaking machine settings, cutting speeds, and gas mixtures—we finally produced a second batch that met our standards and was installed on wood studs.

After a week, we noticed that the edges of our stud shoes began to rust, compromising both aesthetics and safety. Determined to improve, we explored various surface treatments and ultimately settled on a galvanized finish. The result? Heavy-duty, galvanized stud shoes that we sent to Eric for testing.

Over a month later, Eric excitedly informed us that his project passed inspection with flying colors. He recommended our product to friends in need, expressing a desire for us to produce them in bulk to enhance wood stud support while protecting pipes and wiring.

Thanks to Eric and his neighbors’ enthusiastic support, we proudly introduced Stud Shoes for 2x Studs. We hope our product can help you reinforce your wood studs and make your projects safer and more efficient.

Since launching the Stud Shoes for 2x Studs, we've received overwhelming praise from customers who've shared how our product has helped them solve real-world issues. Many have even recommended we expand our product line to cater to Double 2x Studs as well. We're excited to announce that the Stud Shoes for Double 2x Studs are now available! You can choose the right product based on your specific needs.

Don't miss the fact that these are four doubled studs, two studs that are sistered. Also, these have no certification stamps so if your inspector hates you, it could be a problem. We only needed two of these but for the price, we now have two spares. They fit our purpose very well and the screws went into them perfectly. I feel like the structure is stronger with them in place. I am happy with the purchase. They also work as nail plates over big pipes in the walls.Overall, I'm happy with the purchase.

For double stud (3", two 2x4s). Just notch out the double stud, run the cables or plumbing, and screw or nail these steel covers into place to protect the cables or plumbing. The steel is thick enough to protect against drywall nails or screws, but not so thick as to make a noticeable bump in the drywall. The depth is just less than 3.5".

These are perfect to reinforcing doubled up studs that need pipes running through them. The metal is thick, but still thin enough that it doesn't bulge the drywall.

How many times in life does a useful object exceeds one’s expectations? Well, this item goes squarely into that category. These are HEAVY DUTY. They attach over doubled 2x wall studs with an easy, but snug fit. There is no way a screw or nail inadvertently placed is going to pierce this shoe and cause damage to any underlying pipe. Just not going to happen. 16g. galvanized steel shoes protect wires as well as pipes. It’ll even protect the stud itself when there is a high percentage of material is cut away to make up room lost to larger pipes and gives structural strength to the weakened stud. For someone who once mistakenly screwed through a ceiling wire because I forgot to replace the metal electrical protector… and took weeks to locate the short, I would rather spend the money for these stud shoes. The cost seemed a bit high, but from an insurance against more work and more time lost for secondary repairs, it is money well spent.

This is a good stud reinforcement, well-made, similar to other brands.Keep in mind that your local code has restrictions, sometime the usage may be limited to no more than 2 subsequent studs because these have lesser load bearing than a complete stud.
