This Supco APR5 wire-to-wire adjustable potential relay is used to start 1-phase, capacitor-type motors in air conditioning and refrigeration applications. It is a replacement part with adjustable settings for wire-to-wire replacement of most potential relays with 110 to 270 VAC pickup voltage. It has a safety time-out of 1 to 1.5 sec, at which point the contacts will open if the motor does not start. It has universal, non-positional mounting and adapters for screw or push-on terminals. This adjustable potential relay replaces 3- and 5-terminal potential relays and is suitable for use with single phase motors or air conditioning and refrigeration compressors up to 5 hp.

Relay switches (also called an electrical relay or an electrical relay switch) use a small amount of power to control a larger source of power connected to electrical devices such as car motors, computers, and lighting installations. A basic relay switch has a control circuit with an electromagnetic coil and a load circuit with contacts and a lever. When current flows into the relay switch, it moves through the coil and a magnetic field is created, which causes the lever in the load circuit to move between contacts, either turning the device on or off. In a normally open (NO) relay switch, when power is supplied to the relay, the load circuit is closed and the power source connected to the relay is turned on. In a normally closed (NC) relay switch, when power is supplied to the relay, the load circuit is open and the power source connected to the relay is turned off. In other types of relay switches, non-moving parts such as transistors or semiconductors can be used as the control circuit to operate the switching mechanism. Relay switches can be controlled with an external switch, such as a light switch, or they can be connected to an automatically switched power source, such as a car ignition. One relay can operate multiple switches, and multiple relays can be operated with a single switch, with each relay operating independently from the other relays in the system.

Item worked as expected due to the adjustable voltage feature. I was able to quickly repair my compressor. I know that the screws were not included with this relay. The screws from the old unlit did not have the same thread size as this replacement unit and I had to source the correct screws in order to install this relay. I previously reported the screws/hardware was missing, I made a mistake, the parts were found in the bottom of the shipping bag. I had not noticed them when I removed the relay. I apologized for my error.

Remember: This potential relay doesn’t come with screws or terminals. I just received the order today. I wished I would have looked at the description better. Now I need to order the terminals and get the correct screws to fasten the terminals.

My background: I’ve been in the HVACR industry since 1974, had my own business for 32 years. My primary background is refrigeration. I then worked at a refrigeration wholesaler for 3 years after retiring my business. I’ve used these in the field, and sold them. In every case, they had no long-term endurance. They are a bit tricky to adjust, but will work, and are great to get your customer up and running at those 11 pm service calls. But always replace it with the OEM potential relay. Every one that I sold in three years came back as defective - every one! It is a great idea, and not bad for those late night calls, but just not a durable device.

I've been in the hvacr field for 30 years, & can tell you this is a good product (for hvac applications at least). However you have to adjust the pick up voltage, & if you don't get it right it won't work well. normally that information is not on the old relay, so unless you research it, your really guessing. If it's misadjusted, eventually it will damage your compressor, or the relay. Good truck stock to get you out of an emergency until you can return with the OEM.

Installed OK. Very difficult to adjust without pushing the pot so it is unreachable. Must remove the cover to bend back into position.Worked OK while tuning the trip point. Started converter several times OK. Next attempt at starting converter, 3 days later, would not work. Has not worked since.

I was supplied this relay instead of the OEM relay from Copeland. It lasted about 2 weeks and was N/G. The contacts and coil of the relay were cooked. A little POed with the wholesaler for supplying this junk. After opening up the OEM relay and comparing the 2, the contacts and coil in the Supco relay are HALF the size! No wonder it fried. Replaced with OEM relay and never a moments trouble after that!
