Ordered several of these (30+) for a company outreach project - had to return 3 as defective and batteries were not included in 17 packages. One of the items being returned had been purchased before and returned as defective - there was a sticky note on the inside of the package noting that the unit was defective. The vendor sent it back out in my order.

Worked great for less than a year, when the left sensor started throwing an error. This spring, it is DOA, even with fresh batteries. I would have expected a longer life, even with the practically worthless 1-year warranty.

I had to send back the first one, because the buttons didn't seem to work. The temperature display would show up randomly, whether I had pushed the buttons or not, and the min/max never displayed, even after a week of operation. I got the second one to work, although I had to fiddle with resetting the batteries a couple times. Now it works as expected, although I can't say that it inspires confidence. I wonder if I had thought to do this on the first one if that would have made it behave.I like the two temperature sensors. I'm using it on my greenhouse, with one probe on the inside, and one on the outside, so I can see what the differences are and how the insulation is working. I can also foresee using it in the summer to find the max temperatures in my chicken coop, garage and attic, if it's still working by then.

The best feature of this monitor is that you can archive many days of min/max readings and not loose data. This is great if you need to monitor trends and don't have the time or availability to physically check it every day. I use these to monitor storage sheds to determine if supplemental heat or venting is needed to minimize content damage from excessive temperatures. It would be nice if this monitored humidity also, but that isn't in the description and I can't take points off for something that isn't specified. This is a sturdy unit. Having the leads able to place many feet apart is a real plus. On several locations, I have one monitor inside and another outside to verify temp variations and insulation effectiveness. In the sheds I monitor, I measure near the floor vs higher up near the roof using a single monitor. This allows me to simply store more temperature sensitive items at the optimum height for the environmental conditions.

The unit is built tough with mounting flanges at the top and bottom and a hinged cover that protects the display from damage. The probe wires are hard-wired into the case with gaskets on the wires and the battery lid to keep out moisture. Just install the two supplied AA batteries and place the probes where needed. The probe wires are over 8 feet long and the insulation is pliable, tough, and slightly rubbery. The display turns ON when you push the ON button, then turns off when you push it again or times out after 10 minutes. The temperature sensing and recording continues to operate with the display off, saving batteries. There is no time or date settings to bother with, it simply records the max and min temperatures for each 24 hour period, and repeats for 7 days, then starts overwriting the oldest records with the new.I'm investigating the before-after effect of applying a ceramic coating to the outside of a shipping container. I am monitoring the temperature inside and comparing it to the outside ambient temperature. I keep the display unit outside, in the relatively cool ambient air, and have a probe dangling at head height in the middle of the floor about 5 feet inward from the end door. The Taylor unit is so straight forward and simple to operate, all I need to do is check it weekly and write the inside and outside maximum temperatures. I have recorded temperatures up to 157 degrees Fahrenheit with this thermometer.

I was very annoyed to discover that the DOA Chinese AA batteries contained lead so I had to figure out how to recycle the toxic batteries. A typical US manufactured AA does not contain lead. I called Taylor to complain about the lead batteries and they were unaware of the problem. The instructions are in a miniscule font so you may need a magnifying glass to read them, but the unit is easy to operate so the reading the instructions is a onetime affair.I use the thermometer in an orchard. It has two temperature probes that work identically; each has its own buttons. The unit stores the minimum and maximum temperature for each 24-hour period for up to six days. You can purge the data using the reset button. Otherwise, it will replace sixth day's min max temperatures with the 5th day's data and so on.Although the device is supposedly for outdoor use, the battery door is not waterproof so I hang the device out of the weather. To replace the battery you remove two very small Phillips head screws. Do this indoors to avoid losing the screws.Overall, it seems like a good unit for the price however, the battery door could be better, the printed instructions bigger, and it should come with quality US manufactured batteries.

We ordered two of these temp recorders for our greenhouse/garden. They both came with a small instruction booklet which is very easy to understand and operate. They're made of some pretty durable plastic and overall construction seems pretty fair for the price. The LCD screen is quite large and easy to read. The two sensors are nice and long, and it's nice to have the two to place them where needed. We've noticed on one of the units one sensor reads a degree or so lower than the other when placed in the same spot. But in the instructions it does say it's accurate +/- 1.5 degrees so no worries there. We have yet to use them outside but worked great out of the box. The only problem was the supplied batteries were no good, we had to replace them with our own. When using the batteries supplied it seemed the units were no good but that was easily fixed with some name brand AA's. Overall, I'd probably purchase again from what I see so far. Also, these units DO NOT do humidity, only temp.
