A very affordable piece of scientific testing kit that allows you to separate and visually see the component particles of a solution. In my case, it will show all the different colored pigments and dyes that make up a final color of fountain pen ink. These strips have tighter fibers than the coffee filters or paper towels that might also serve in a pinch, which gives more consistent and smoother results, although may require longer "dip" times to allow more time to absorb the water "carrier" which creates the color spectrum. To use, simply apply a fine line of the test compound to one end of the strip, maybe 1cm (1/2") from the end. Then, dip that end of the chromatography paper into distilled water, but not as far as the line, allowing the water to absorb through the paper fibers, past the test compound, and carry most of it further up the strip through capillary action. Lighter particles will go further, heavier particles will lag behind, and the final result will be a spectrum of colors, giving you an idea of the different colors that make up the tested fluid. The included photo is of three strips as packaged, each cut in half lengthwise, and dipped in water for different periods of time to determine the best visual results. Also shown is the glass pen used to draw the test line across all 6 strips, the fountain pen ink being tested, and a paper towel used to clean the pen, also demonstrating a simpler chromatography "test" with less consistent results. To add a note to the chroma paper that won't dissolve if it gets wet, use a pencil.

This is great paper for testing the chromatography of my fountain pen inks. I can't speak to more rigorous scientific uses, but I found that the ink dyes separate well on this papers and reveal the underlying colors. They are a good size, maybe even a bit big for what I'm using them for, but I'd rather that than have them too small. I have plenty of pieces to test many inks to come.
