This is our second purchase and you do need to replace them about every year or so, but totally worth it to clear the pond water without using chemicals that may harm the fish.

Have had a koi pond several years now. A novice at the beginning, I resisted the purchase of a UV, because they were not cheap, and I doubted the claim that it would pretty much put an end to green water. I battled algae the first year, with enzymes, bacteria, water changes, and brushes to scrape around the pond and remove the masses of string algae - a constant battle that I kept losing. Finally gave in and purchased the UV - my pond is only 1,500 gallons, but I figured bigger is better (same rule of thumb for filters, by the way) so I got the 36 watt. Huge difference; no more green water, and algae under control.

I will be returning this product. It does not turn on. I have two UVC-36s from Tetra. I tried it in both, to no avail.
