These are designed for small hands. (Yes, ages 6 and up, however under supervision the five year old was the key mastermind in the family water balloon fight. The older kids 10 and 13 were enjoying it as well and yes happily got into the fun instead of sulking like teens do.) The walkie-talkies are about the size of a juice box, buttons are easy to use and similar to look of cell phone like functions. It's easy to show them how they work, the instructions help, and even talk about understanding how walkie talkies work. Use of "over" and "over and out" and CB radio like lingo is cool to know! That helped so they knew both parties are heard clearly. The small size made them easily concealed for that covert operation dubbed: water balloon mom and dad for pizza. We were "unsuspecting," they had great range all through the house. (Didn't let them test the over a mile away aspect. They are NOT water proof, but cheap enough we aren't worried if anything did happen. Which thankfully didn't, just needing batteries was the only fuss in the house.) But we adults were happy the batteries were kept out of young curious hands by a screw holding them in safely. The three optional channels kept their mission safe and secure. Yes, mom and dad both took an orchestrated barrage of water balloons, please get them water balloons with these you will unleash their creativity and fun. Eventually we parents succeeded, the pizza was well earned after great fun on a hot day. Even after the fun we heard the crackle of the walkie-talkies and the "over" and "over and out" through out the evening. It's worth it to find anything new to try and get them outside to play, especially something that isn't a video game, and helps find their creative side.

Putting in the batteries was a pain. When I went to take out the small phillips one of them instantly started to strip. Screws are flimsy and you have to be very careful to apply a lot of down pressure to the screw when taking it out. After taking the screw out then needed to remove the belt clip to take the back plate off. I used a small flat screw driver to depress the tab to release the clip and slide it out of the way. Once I put it all together found that plastic was too weak to keep the retaining tab in place to keep the clip on. So the clip is useless once you have put batteries in the walkie talkie.Once all put together and tested out the features I wasn't that impressed but could be generous and call them spy walkie talkie features. The LED light for the "flashlight" is very dim even in a dark room. The tone when turning on/off or the call button is fairly loud but once you go to talk the volume is very weak. There is no way to adjust the volume so you will need to listen carefully to hear what is being said with no background noise. Not having the talk button on the side of the walkie talkie makes these clunky to use and generally feel cheap. These work and could be fun for kids but I would spend less and get a regular set of walkie talkies next time with more channels, twice the range (even if they achieved the advertised range), and other basic features that the kids and I could both get more use out of. Generous rounding up to call these 4 stars for me.

First, these Walkies work … And, these are intended for kids so you may find my review overly picky but this is my experience with the Thames and Kosmos Spy Labs walkie talkies. After unboxing them, you must install 3 AAA batteries per walkie. In order to install the batteries, you must remove the belt clips and then unscrew and remove the battery compartment door. This is needlessly complicated in my opinion. Once the batteries are installed the walkies are turned on by hitting the power button. There are 5 buttons including the power button. There is a button for a light. However the light is so dim it isn’t worth much. There is a button to flip between the three supported channels. The channels and ability to flip between them work fine. Another button plays a tone on the remote walkie as well as on your own walkie. This also works fine. The final button allows you to transmit to the other walkie. You must press and hold the button while talking and release the button for the other person to respond. This works fine and is pretty standard. We did try to test distance and you start to get static at about 1/10 to 1/5th of a mile. It gets progressively worse as you get farther but even at about 1/3rd to 1/2 of a mile (max tested) you could still hear and understand the other person. I do have my doubts that the range is really 1.5 miles in real life usage. The biggest issue with these walkies is that there is no way to adjust the volume. In a loud environment these are worthless. Even in a somewhat loud environment the volume of the walkies is too low to be useful. This seriously limits the usefulness and usability of these walkie talkies. There are many walkie talkies available on Amazon. Many have better specs and the ability to adjust the volume. Many that have those features are offered at a better price than these walkies. Overall, these are just ok … nothing special and in some scenarios less than ok.
