This my first pair of Thorogood boots and very impressed of the quality and workmanship, but like others have commented the water proof membrane causes the tongue to bunch up when lacing.By NO means is this a show stopper. I know the tongue will soften up and conform in time.My initial impression is pleasing...no pinching, or binding. The supple leather uppers and the lug sole are a perfect combination. The brown leather used in 1957 Series really sets them apart.Thorogood is a top tier boot company and you pay for that distinction. With proper care these boots should provide a return on your investment.

2nd pair of Thorogood boots I've purchased, fantastic quality as anticipated. My first pair of wedge soles are finally coming up due for replacement at 5 years of everyday wear. I could go further on a resole. These boots I've owned a year and a half and wear them every weekend. They still look practically new, and show gorgeously. Very comfortable, easy to wear and put on, and essentially no break in period. I still get compliments frequently. Best deal on a truly quality made in USA pair of boots on the market.

I have a wide foot so I decided to order the same shoe size but with EE. Initially I had issues with the weirdest tongues. It took me a few days to break in. My feet feel so comfortable after long day of walking. Just a suggestion, it would be helpful if the shoe laces are a few inches longer and they can shorten the extra tongues.

Leather is thick and oily. Deep, rich color. Stitching is heavy and flawless. Metal hardware is quality. I chose these boots because of the thick, rubber outsoles (for winter). Laces are a tight, dense weave. Again, quality.I treated them with Obenauf’s. After our first big snow, I walked to work that day. Hiking up and down snow banks, plowing right through them. Boots still looked new at the end of the day. They are built like a tank.I was confident about the size I ordered and am glad to say they fit like any other heritage boot. I am very satisfied with the fit. Heel is snug, doesn’t slip. Toe box is right amount of space. Everything just feels snug without being constricting. I’m only on my second wear, still a bit of breaking in to do around the ankles. I wear thick, wool socks and moleskin patches. Other than that, the boots are truly comfortable out of the box as advertised.I can’t say I was surprised at the quality and construction because of the reputation behind Thorogood. But seeing these come out of the box was pure joy. I’ll be getting some regular Moc-Toes for Spring/Summer.

They look nice and visually made well but that’s were it stops. The width is narrow so we can stretch leather in that area. The shin bone(s) hates these shoes! Lace it tight enough to not get the laces to unhook and it just hurts. I read about the tongue and didn’t understand what the complaint was but I do now. The massive leather “bunched” at the tongue looks horrible and hinders the lacing them correctly! Not being cheap but at the upper end of boots. come on!Hope the other models are better than this stinker!

The boot is very comfortable from the ankle down but the tongue on this boot is horrible. It seems to be too large for the area it is covering and makes it impossible to lace the boot without bunching it up and causing much discomfort. I have loosened the laces for the time being in hopes that it will break in and be easy to get situated but I am not overly optimistic at this point.

I have been a Red Wing guy for most of my life (past 25 years) and I am a BIG AMERICAN MADE FAN. When the boot that I have been wearing was discontinued by Red Wing and I was not able to find another one that I likes I punched in "American made work boot" and one of the first boots that popped up was the "1957 series 6" steel toe work boot" it looked very similar to the Red Wing boot that I have worn for many years and I liked what I read about it. I ordered a pair and besides the tongue issue which I wrote about in the review for that boot, It is a STELLAR boot. well made, good looking and of course American Made... So impressed with that boot, I purchased this boot and have had an even better break in experience than i did with the steel toe version.the 1957 series boot is a stellar product. the black sole that is on this boot is also on the steel toe version, and it is very durable and wears well. unfortunately I only get about 6 to 8 months (a year if i am lucky) out of a work boot (been that way for 25 years) its not that the boots are not made well, its the environment I work in. so I have had a lot of boot over the years. this pair is a keeper. You may have to try a couple pair to find your perfect size (I did) Red Wing boots do not fit "just like" Thorogood boots. Once you find your size, you will love them.

Great looking shoes, sturdy, everything fits great, except they put this fold of fabric at the edge of the tongue right on my medial malleolus (inner ankle bump.) Unfortunately, makes them unwearable. Maybe I have uncommon ankles (doubtful,) but if not, this is a major design flaw.
