If you have a bunch of books to read, you can pick this one to start with, or can save it, as the best for last. Great characters, decent plot, always interesting and enjoyable.A few proofing errors - page 75 "not her past work, or shills, or connections...". The author should have used "nor" rather than "or". On page 84, the author referring to hidden money refers to it as "some offshore 401(k)" - now that is just a plain dumb phrase - as a 401(k) is not some kind of hidden account - in fact it is very open to the IRS and Treasury Dept. So, having one "offshore" to hide it, does not make sense - just a lack of understanding of the nature of a 401(k). On page 91, the author writes "He had never been hungry, or homeless, or anything approaching what Betsy Odom had endured." Again, the author should have used "nor" instead of "or".So, except for the proofing errors and the lack of understanding the nature of a 401(k) - all of which I would consider minor annoyances, this book is certainly worth buying and reading.

Travis Devine is a dynamic man thrust into a confusing world of criminal conspiracies and domestic terrorism when he's specifically requested to accompany a newly orphaned 13 year old girl to meet with a former soldier to whom he owes his life. Travis develops a soft spot for the preteen whose world has crumbled and is being used as the object of a viscous tug of war between the bad guys, the government, and her uncle. Travis will do everything in his power to get to the bottom of what's happening since he's not getting any help from anyone but the assassin trying to kill him. Baldacci crafts quite the intricate story, it's impossible to know for certain who's on Devine's side and who opposes him. This is an entertaining and complex thriller with a great pace that's difficult to put down if you have an early morning. I'm enjoying these books and look forward to each new installment, Travis has a code that is complex but well defined and is marked with kindness and determination. He's patriotic as well as realistic and very hard to kill. I would love to see Travis encounter other characters Baldacci has, like Will Robie or the Camel Club members, but I'm definitely reading more no matter what.

Hard to put down and exciting to the end. And most of all very appropriate timing. We who love our constitutional democracy must stand strong against those who want to destroy it because it’s keeping us safe from tyranny.

After finishing Book 3 in this Series, “ To Die For “ I must say this is one of David Baldacci’s best set of Characters. Then I remember King and Maxwell, Arlene Pine, Archer and So Many other Characters He has written about, all of whom I really liked. I’ll leave it at this: David Baldacci is a Fantastic Author, with Characters and Plots that are impossible to beat. Read them All.

Fantastic read. Fast paced, suspenseful. A story told by a master of the genre, an author of skill and vision. It takes a special talent to weave a story like this with so many strands of people, time, location and problems within problems. Thank you for another great read and for the missing hours. It was worth every minute.

Two rapid-paced, action-packed, pulse-pounding mystery novels were published in November. The first, David Baldacci’s “To Die For” is the third in the 6:20 Man series featuring former Army Ranger and Wall Street denizen Travis Devine, who earned the peg 6:20 Man for boarding the 6:20 a.m. commuter train to Manhattan daily. In this account, Devine is sent to Seattle to help the FBI protect a 12-year-old orphan whose uncle, who faces RICO charges himself, is trying to adopt her. According to officials in a remote community the girl’s parents died of a drug overdose, though the girl refutes this. It turns out the community may be one of several fortresses of a group of conspirators plotting to overthrow the federal government.Devine faces danger at every turn. The second book, James Patterson’s “The House of Cross” is the 33rd in a series focusing on FBI contractor and psychiatrist Alex Cross. In the first books in the series the fact that Cross is Black was central to story, but in later volumes that is seldom mentioned. In fact, in this edition the only mention of race that recall came with Cross’ wife Bree Stone, a former D.C. chief detective, feels uncomfortable for being unable to blend in the background because she is the only Black at funeral for a suspect. This book, too, is set in the northwest of the nation and in Canada, but in the dead of winter, which is often as much of a threat to life and limb as the villains of the piece, who happen to be another vast group of conspirators with plots to alter the country. This by targeting Supreme Court justices and potential nominees for the high court. The conspiracy is headed by someone known as M.Both books are intricately plotted and keep their protagonists in constant danger, escaping via their wits and well-earned combat skills. They are available at several online sites and local bookstores.
