It will take some getting use to. Replacing one I've had for about 40 years. The handle on the new one is several inches shorter and a couple of pounds heavier. The more I use it the better it feels. It's a very rugged, durable tool. I'm sure it will outlast me.

Borrowed one from a neighbor and wanted my own. The handle seems a little short, but it will split some of the toughest logs if you swing it hard. Its not for the weak or faint of heart. I like the shape which is as it should be, a little convex ground at about 40 degrees. It is covered with a very thick red paint which you will have to grind off to sharpen it. It wasn't terribly dull or anything, but needed just a little sharpening to get through that paint to get to the metal edge.

It’s a monster. Very heavy. Will give you a workout. You have to sharpen it as it has no edge out of the box at all

I owned several of the original "Monster Maul" splitter back in the 80's. My son sold them off on me and I needed a new one to split wood for him, kind of ironic, huh. I ordered this one and I'm pretty satisfied with it. Weighing in at a total of about 16 pounds this isn't for the "faint of heart" and takes some serious strength to use effectively. It's easily as heavy as the original and, like the original the handle is full length heavy steel tubing and re-enforced for the first eight or ten inches down from the head. The only real difference I find between this reproduction and the original is the handle length.I'm a six footer with fairly long arms and the handle feels a little short to me, like eight or ten inches short. That length difference does make a significant difference in the speed that the head can move at which, in turn, reduces the amount of force of each stroke. Yeah, I'm 73 now but I can still swing this thing for a few hours at a time and feel the longer handle would make it more productive. If you're looking for a good, effective, hand splitter look no further. Well worth the money IMHO.

Pros:- Destroys most rounds if landed correctly.Cons:- Metal handle is really heavy without adding to the effectiveness of the maul.- Metal handle transmits vibration which fatigues hands.- Handle is a straight cylinder which gives no tactile information on which direction the head it pointed.

Pretty solid splitting maul. Had one of the same design years ago when I was splitting a few cords of wood per year for our wood stoves. I’ve used a lot of them and this all steel design is the best. No broken handles is one selling point. The other is the design of the head. It’s so obtuse that it exerts tremendous pressure on the work. This will still bounce off a large, stubborn log, but eventually it starts the crack. I never liked using wedges. One time I had a splitting maul (not this style) and two wedges stuck in a really large log. This design is way better because it will NEVER get stuck. My ONLY complaint with this model is that I need a longer handle; maybe a 35” overall length would be best. I’m 6.0’ and like getting the most out of the centrifugal leverage.
