You do need to head start by getting the nail head out to make it easier to nail it. I had to nail it to old growth and it was a little harder than today's cheap big box wood but it worked.

They work great! Only thing is the nail isn't all the way in the plastic, only about 1/2 way. So it wants to spin when you start to hammer. If it were all the way in, the nail would grab the wood and it wouldn't spin. But they do work fine, just have to hammer in the nail before using
