Did what it was advertised to do. I do wish the vertical tracking gauge used a higher contrast ink (ie white or neon) for visibility against my black slip mat or records, but that’s a minor issue

I decided to try this Axiom alignment tool set with the idea that, if they were nice enough, I could pass some of my old stuff down to a friend getting started in vinyl. I am happy to say it is very nice. For anyone just starting out, the alignment of the stylus in the record groove is critical to accurately tracing the groove and minimizing distortion, which is primarily caused by misalignment in the first place. This is a non-issue for plug-in cartridges, T4p (or P-mount) being the most common of those. But for the vast world of standard half-inch mount cartridges a method of proper alignment is essential when replacing the cart(ridge). To that end, we use a protractor and an azimuth tool. A protractor is used to check the adjustment of the cartridge alignment, which is to say the alignment of the stylus with the record groove. (First picture) There are many videos online to explain the process in detail, so I won't bother here. However, it is done at two precise points on the arc of tonearm travel, so the tool must be marked exactly. The Axiom protractor is just right. It uses the common Baerwald alignment. It has a nice, smooth finish and is about the thickness of a record. I checked it against a turntable that is already properly adjusted and it is right on. Azimuth (second pic) and Vertical Tracking Angle (third pic) are checked with the azimuth block. Again, the world of the internet will demonstrate the proper method. Azimuth is the alignment of the stylus perpendicular to the groove. This angle affects the left/right balance and also has a small effect on distortion. The Axiom tool for this is also right on. It is well-polished and properly marked, and it's very easy to view the cart through it. Likewise, it was perfect for viewing VTA, which is the angle that the stylus tip makes contact front to back. I think this Axiom set is extremely nice, especially for the price. It's easy to find similar tools for a lot more, but they don't actually do more. I would recommend this to anyone planning to replace their cartridge. Even if you don't do the job yourself, it's great to have a way to check the alignment after it's been done for you if it doesn't sound right. I am very pleased.
