Long tool afforded extra leverage making it easy to cut threads, even in hardened brake rods

I bought this for using one of the dies I got in a kit from Harbor Freight. The die fit inside, but wobbly and definitely not snug. The set screw that came with this tool wasn't even tapped in straight, but off to the side where it doesn't align with the notch on the die. Hence, the die just kept slipping when I got down to business, no matter how tight I made it. The lack of snugness of the die inside the stock made the whole tool non-precise. Finally, when my threading got close to the end, the side just broke off. Poorly made, weak and clumsy. Definitely not for threading real metal pipe of good quality!!

It works. It seems very stout. Treat this as a kit or unfinished tool and I think you will be happy with it for infrequent use. I would not recommend it if you need to use it a lot. It's too rough and crude. The set bolt is just that, a bolt. Unscrew it, put a bit of a dog point on it with a grinder to fit the drive divots on the die. Also, probably help to clean the extra paint off and if you can come up with a spacer system, the die will seat more consistently. As received, the recess for the die is much deeper than the die is tall (dim along the axis). If the die is placed all the way into the depth of the holder, the set bolt does not line up with the drive divots. With some mods, I think the die handle could be made to hold both a die and a guide to help make sure the tap axis is concentric with the tube axis. I didn't do this yet, so it is an idea only right now.Overall, I rate it a maybe. I used it to convert a Raleigh proprietary threaded steer tube to standard 1"-24. It worked, but was really stressful because it was a one shot deal. Get it right or lose the original steer tube on a vintage bike fork. Be aware of what you are buying and prepared to deal with its weaknesses.

Die fit and adjusted perfect. Both handles can be removed if needed. For the price, works fine.

It did the job but you could tell it was a cheapo tool. Came in a box with nothing but Chinese calligraphy so couldn't tell much from box till I opened it.

Harbor Freight sells a great set of 4 pipe thread dies, but they do not offer a die stock to use with those dies. This die stock fits the NPT 1/2" DIE PERFECTLY and is reasonably priced.
