To better understand each type of commonly used stainless steel and its properties, see the following descriptions.
- 440C Stainless Steel is a high carbon martensitic stainless steel. It has high strength, medium corrosion resistance, good hardness, and wear resistance
- 304 Stainless Steel is the most widely used stainless steel. It is austenitic stainless steel and has a higher corrosion resistance than ordinary steel.
- 316L Stainless Steel is also austenitic stainless steel. It offers higher corrosion resistance than 304.
- 201 Stainless Steel is the least expensive type of stainless steel. It is tough in cold environments but has lower corrosion resistance. It is the preferred choice for applications that require low cost, high durability, and no concern for exposure to corrosive elements.

Like many other nerds I am using these to mix paints. Particularly my Vallejo Game Color (2023) and mediums.Like others I tried glass boiling stones because there was afraid of rust; and like others I found them to be far too light to mix good thick acrylics. If nothing else, Stainless Steel is gnerally far denser than glass, and is far better as an agitator, and these were larger and heavier than the common Army Painter offering at an equivalent price, and thus a better mixing aid in every respect.So I did some research based on Uxcells' claims and found that these should do the job very well if they were in fact material that they said they were.First, 316L is about the most rust/corrosion resistant metal available. It's equivalents are used in marine equivalent to resist sea water, and inside the human body as surgical steel. They should be able to survive water based acrylic paint and any of the compounds/mediums that the paints are made of.Second, you'll see claims that 316/L steel is "non-magnetic" - this is a relativistic statement - compared to other kinds of steel. This is due to the addition of molybdenum, which both reduces the quantity of ferrous iron and creates a different structure within the present iron (known as an Austenic lattice) which changes the way magnets interact with the iron to begin with. Further, cold processing, rolling, or bending damages these structures and, in short, returns some of the magnetism to the iron.So, what that means for you is that *THESE* 316L balls are little magnet after all of you use a high power raw or rare earth magnet! You will get almost nothing with a weak refrigerator magnet. So do not be alarmed if these have a little pull.What is most important is going to be my TLDR...>TLDR:>Five days and counting in distilled water with salt and concentrated vinegar, no signs of corrosion or rust.>Would have liked something other than a baggie to keep them in.>WASH BEFORE USE to remove any factory rests so you don't foul or contaminate whatever you are putting them in.

I used these balls to add weight to a tool used in chlorinated pool water. After a few months, they are still free of any signs of corrosion,. which is all I ask of them.

We have well water at the house. We treat the water with Sodium Hydroxide. The holding tank accumulates sand in the bottom of the tank because it is before the filter.We wrap the pickup tube for the sodium hydroxide tank in cheesecloth to filter out the sand. That causes the pickup tube to float. We dropped a few ball bearings in the cheesecloth bag, and no more problems with the pump drawing air!
