We live near the coast and the springs used in the dog scoops only last about 6 months. I got this stainless steel spring hoping it would last longer. You need to bend open the ends to form a hook (see the pictures of the standard spring and with the ends opened). It's slightly smaller than the spring that comes with the unit, but it gives a decent amount of closing force when extended. I will have to see how well this holds up.
