Threading in new shift cable without cleaning old housing thread is frustrating- this inexpensive, specific sized, thread cutting tool makes quick work of worn or dirty housing thread.

How do you review a tap? I needed a SPS (straight thread pipe) tap to finish modifying a lamp. I didn't want to pay the national debt of a 3rd world country to get one. It tapped the hole through 1/4" steel just fine, and I expect it'll tap quite a few more if needed. Not often that I need a straight VS tapered pipe tap. Quick delivery.

I used this to retap a Mercruiser pre-alpha gimbal housing (actually the bell housing) so that the shift cable could be installed from the outdrive side. The manual calls for a 1/4 - 18 NPSF (National Pipe Straight Fuel) which is microscopicly different but this worked just fine. Just coat the threads of the shift cable with Permatex Aviation form-a-gasket (Mercury's replacement for their Perfect Seal sealant) and you should be all good.

This tap did a good job in creating threads for a pipe plug that I needed.

Worked like a charm to tap to install a pressure gauge. Didn't use a tap wrench like you're "supposed" to. But it worked out perfectly fine. Will be part of my tools collection.
