Not having a way to focus the lens manually or automatically defeats the entire purpose of this camcorder's primary function: deliver good quality pictures and video. Every picture and video requires the user to be in an optimal distance from the subject to get any quality video or picture. That's like 8 feet. Microphone (and external one) produce poor quality sound. This is fine for kids as a toy, but it's very limited to being useless and headed for the landfill. For those contemplating purchasing this camcorder, your best bet is to buy an old iPhone 4s for a few bucks as it gives impeccable pictures and videos for a fraction of the cost of this garbage.

My ten year old grandson was interested in making videos so I got him this camcorder because it wasn't too expensive and had decent reviews. The external microphone is very sensitive and creates some distortion, even at a distance. Otherwise, it's a good starter camcorder and we're happy with it.
