This was my first oiled jacket, so I was only going by pictures of the product, which looked great When I got it, though, it had a much more (what my wife called) 'utilitarian' look to it, and much less of the stylish, graceful elegant look to it that the fine men in the picturesque English countryside photos seemed to be portraying. It definitely gave me more of a workman look- which can also be great, but I have other clothes I use when I want to work, and other brands that I wear (rhyming with things like far heart and hickies and lariat) that have that look, so I wasn't looking for it in this coat. I also didn't expect to actually feel the physical oil on my hand when I touched it, or to have that oil act as a magnet for dog hair and dust and dirt and particles, OR to have to reapply that oil every year. All of this I think is perfectly normal of oiled hackers, and I'm sure the surface oil will fade in soon- they probably added a bit extra for storage, handling and travel, which is good. I think the images really misrepresented the actual look, but the look is still nice for what it is, which might be EXACTLY what an oiled jacket fan might be looking for. The quality was clearly very good, though, and I almost wanted to keep it for that alone and just wear it for different times than I had been planning, but my wife had a cooler head and convinced me I didn't need ANOTHER jacket for general wear. I need something more formal. I returned it myself, but I'm still giving 5 stars for the quality and the look, even though it wasn't the look I had been going for. I won't take of any revenge points for my being misled by the countryside photos with the models, and the quality is excellent, so full marks there. If you're a person experienced with oiled coats and want a quality one that will hold up to use and abuse and be solid worker (or if that's just the look you're going for), this is a great, less expensive option with full British cred. I also wonder if, for men of smaller frames, getting this jacket in a smaller, lighter, closer fitting size might make it look more refined...

I’ve been searching for years for a quality coat that had the versatility to wear over a thin business shirt and keep me warm or with multiple layers of clothing underneath, when travelling to the southern states, and trips to New Zealand.Walking the dogs, going to the footy at night this cost is perfect. I will also use it when I head to Alaska and Canada in a month and although still summer there, the average temperature will be around 11°C so add a little wind and rain and I think I’m going be very comfortable in my new Walker & Hawkes coat.Sizing:My strong recommendation is to use the manufacturers sizing..Amazon recommended a 2XL and I needed a 4XL.Normally a 3XL would do the job, but the 4XL just gives you the opportunity to layer when you need to.5.8 and 118kgs.This is perfect for a variety of occasions dress up or dress down, but stay comfortable, you won’t be disappointed. Thanks Walker and Hawkes!

I wasn't sure about this to start with as I'd never heard of the brand and the listing is a little spartan. But then I checked the reviews and I'm glad I did.I usually order size L and the jacket is true to size with enough room underneath to wear a jumper or a fleece. The padding is not too thick but doesn't need to be, it's nice and warm. The lower pockets are a good size - I can fit my thermal cup entirely in one of them and the handwarmer pockets are just the right height and depth. There is a large poachers pocket inside but I've not use that yet. My only real gripe about the jacket is that the elasticated cuffs inside the sleeves are a little high up and felt odd the first few times wearing it. I'm used to it now, though. Oh, and the zip is a bit... odd. I don't know why wax jackets always seem to come with the double-ended zip - I'm not going lambing in it in the spring!Anyway, those minor niggles aside, it's a great jacket from what appears to be a good, home-grown brand. The jacket is well made, comfortable and exactly as described in the listing. I'll happily recommend Walker and Hawkes to anyone.

OK, first off, I'm going to assume if you ordered this, you wanted an oilskin jacket. For those of you not familiar with it, oilskin is a tightly woven canvas, that is treated with waxes or oil in order to be wind and rain proof. By it's very nature, the material feels a bit slick and waxy (or sometimes 'oily'). When you get this coat, take it out of the plastic, and put it on a hanger to air out for a day or two, so you don't have to worry about it getting any residue on whatever is next to it in the closet. If you take it directly out of the packaging, and put it in a closet tightly against other garments, it 'might' leave the tiniest bit of residue on whatever it is next to. Air it out a day or two, and no worry. Now, on to the coat itself.Cut is about average, meaning it fits about as expected, I got an XL, and it is a straight cut, not tapered at the waist, so it hangs straight down. Length is about halfway down my jeans pocket, which combined with the straight cut, makes for a very nice foul weather coat. Any rain/fog/snow that gets on it, rolls straight down, and drips off the bottom. The little bit extra length keeps the wind from blowing up it. I do NOT like a cold wind blowing up my back, and I also do not like the way some coats with elastic on the bottom bunch up, either. The length and cut of this coat, are what I consider 'just right' in terms of blocking wind and rain, without being excessively long, or restricting movement. The insulation (padding) is fairly light, but in reality it is a warmer coat than one would think based on first impression, and that is due to the oilskin exterior. The oilskin blocks pretty much all wind short of a hurricane, so it does a better job keeping body heat in than a heavier coat that would let a wind draft through.Construction is good, every stitch is tight, all the seams are straight, I'd give 5 stars for workmanship. So, you may be wondering why only 4 stars when it is made of top notch materials, with, cut the way I like it, and done with excellent workmanship? Well, the answer would be the Zipper and pockets. The Zipper is what I'd call 'left handed' in that the half that the pull is permanently attached to is on the opposite side of what I am used to. That is a small annoyance, but a bigger one would be the pockets. There is no inside chest pocket for things like a pen and notebook (or wallet). The slash handwarmer pockets have and OK but not ideal location, and the bottom bellows pockets look big, but really aren't. I may be nit-picking but my glove sized XL hands barely fit into the bellows pockets. They are big enough to work, but it's tighter than I like, and a pair of warm gloves like you would expect to wear with a warm coat like this, pretty well fills one pocket up. Putting anything more in it, makes it bulge like it is overfilled. Combine this with the lack of inside chest pocket, and there really isn't a lot of places to put stuff, with one exception: There is one HUGE inside pocket, that is accessed by one hand, that runs all the way around the back of the coat. Now, if you research the original intent of this coat, then the design makes more sense: It was originally an English hunting coat. Looking at it from that point of view, the backwards zipper makes perfect sense (can zip and unzip while holding a shotgun broken open and cradled in your right hand as you see in so many English hunting pictures. The smallish pockets are just the right size to hold a handful of shotgun shells out of the weather, yet easy to reach because you can grab one or two without having to put your whole hand into the pocket to get them. The lack of breast pockets make sense because there is nothing to snag the butt of the shotgun. The single giant inside pocket (which seems to be lined with some sort of slick waterproof fabric) is perfect for carrying home your partridges. The design is perfect for that, but not perfect (but still pretty good) for daily wear. Where it shines is in foul windy weather. the fabric stops the cold, wind, and wet as good or better than anything. Included is a snap on hood of the same fabric. If you can live with the design, you won't find a better quality coat for the money IMO.

I am 6'4" tall and weigh 230lbs and this (L size) coat fits me perfectly. The coat is of absolutely splendid quality and makes the Barbour and Dubarry equivalents seem very overpriced indeed. The length is just right and the slot pockets are perfectly positioned and the coat is tremendously warm. W&H does make more expensive and presumably better coats, but I don't know what else you'd need from a waxed coat that this one does not provide; this coat comes highly recommended. The coat arrives newly waxed, so it's advisable to hang it out to dry off somewhere like your garage for about 48 hours before throwing it straight into the closet, or else the oily residue may rub off on other items. The hood is indeed small and seemingly inadequate, but I don't plan on using it very much, if at all. I am also reliably informed by those who wear this while hunting (I regrettably do not have the spare time for field sports), that the hood is necessarily small so the hunter retains a good field of vision; this is, I suppose, a fair trade for a wet face.Hunter or not, the hood is by the by for me, this is a great coat and it is impressive quality at a truly unbeatable price.

This is a great coat for the money. Other brands, these go for twice the amount. Some things to know, order a size smaller than what you wear. I am 5'10" and 180 pounds and a medium fits perfectly with some room. The extra padding gives it some warmth. I would say this is a good late Fall/ early Spring jacket - good for weather between 60-40 degrees. The zipper zips on the wrong side, but is easy to get used to. The hood is a great extra feature, but a bit small. The wax coating at first is a bit slick, but just leave the jacket hanging up for a day, and it's fine. The material is sturdy and it looks great. I'm satisfied.
