This gasket is completely enclosed in metal that appears to be stainless steel. It would be a great choice for new pipes. Unfortunately since it is so strong, it was unable to conform completely to the pitted surface of my 20 year old manifold flange. I achieved a better seal with a less-expensive Fel-Pro gasket for this application. This gasket was used on a front pipe section replacement on a 2003 Camry.
