You have to jab the prongs in you get an accurate reading

Tested it on a few components to see what it came with and it appears accurate. I say that because I don't have another meter to check it with but based off the reported moisture level and my experience with the wood, it does appear correct. It's pretty straight forward to use and can be a great tool to have not only to detect leaks that may not be obvious but also verify if wood you want to use for a project is dry enough to not warp.Definitely recommend this if you're looking for a quality one at an affordable price.

Summary: Did what I expected to see and able to make use of the tool for my primary purpose of firewood.I got this mostly to test firewood, though it does test well on other objects. I have no way of validating that the % values are accurate though the relative differences between what's expected to be dry to wet do fit. Of the wood that has been in a sheltered area was reading 10% vs wood that was outside that was 15-30% and closer to the ground 80-90%. The 80%+ didn't need a tester to tell me it was wet! All of these readings are inline with expectations which makes me believe in the % values. The wood selection from my non-scientific exploration shows just a 5-10% potential difference based on the wood type using one specific sample. This makes sense considering the conductivity of the fibers are different and sensitivity levels need to be changed. I was unable to explore this area fully.Of course, these are all measured on the surface and samples of cores would need to be taken. For example a recently cut dead tree which was noticeably packed with some moisture at the time while splitting measured 14% after a day which is not realistic. This is not a fault in the tool though, just a limitation of what can be measured and how to properly apply the tool. For woodworking testing on a piece of plywood that has been in a dry indoor area did show 1%. When bending it could also be used to make sure steam penetration was complete enough if looking for a specific level.I have no doubt about drywall testing as a general sense, though the % values might be subjective it will show where a wet area and non wet area are.
