This mortise bit is for soft woods only. Would not push into Maple. Smaller diameter seems to work ok, but these large diameter chisels (5/8 and up) is just too much to try and push that corner through. If you’re doing large mortises in hardwood, do not buy. Get yourself some nice Richter mortise chisels. Smaller mortises, (1/4 to 3/8) works well. Only have to push that corner radius, which isn’t much for a 1/4 hole.

Machining was done very poorly. I didn't want to spend the time necessary to properly hone everything.

If the quality was better would have gotten a higher rating.

Heavy burrs, horrific machining and the bit does not spin freely in the hollow chisel. Don’t buy and spend the money on quality. I now have to waste more time on returning. Need I say more ?

I purchased the 5/8” mortise chisel and bit. It was not sharp. Wouldn’t even cut the first mortise without sharpening it. The chisel is so poor I couldn’t get a uniform edge when sharpening. Will not buy again!

No explanation that this was a 5/8" collar and I needed a 3/4" not worth sending back, will give it to a buddy who can use it.

I broke the auger on my Powermatic chisel. I was looking for a replacement. I first bought the Delta chisel. Not only would it not fit my Powermatic mortiser but the outside of the chisel was poorly finished and rough. It would have taken a lot of time smoothing it. This chisel was cheaper and looked like it would fit my mortiser. I paid $17 for it on Amazon.. the chisel is smoother than the Delta. Very much like the Powermatic. Comparing it to the Powermatic the auger had fewer spirals. I don't know what the quality of the steel is. I sharpened and honed it and made a few mortises in maple. I took it slow only making partial plunges. It seemed to work fine. Not sure how long it will last but I'm keeping it.
