I ordered this to go under my daughter's softball jersey. Getting hit by a pitch can sometimes be really painful so I thought having some extra padding around the ribs would be helpful but the heart and sternum padding is essential. A line drive to the chest could be catastrophic. I ordered a size small and my 9 year old is on the slim side. This runs big and unfortunately does not offer any compression. On the plus size, with the tank being larger, the padding is larger covering more of her body. The heart/sternum padding covers half the front of her body. The tank has breathable fabric on the shoulders and outlining the rib protector pads. My daughter said she will have no issues wearing this for games and practices.

This protector is used while skiing, mountain biking, and bmx racing. The material holds up well and is good in the heat or the cold - no over abundance of sweat.Also, our child loves wearing these for additional confidence and protection.A good deal if gotten on sale.We do not put this in the dryer after washing to increase longevity.

Bought this for my 12 yr old son who plays comp baseball. He wanted some extra protection for batting practice. Medium was a little baggy and loose on him but he said the fabric was comfortable and even tucked it wouldn't create a bulky look at his waist. we will hang on to it for when he grows into it and go with a small.

My son has started doing tackle football from flag and he wears this under his pads during practice and games. He's about 5'0 and 85 pounds as a reference and a size medium fits him. It's not compression really, but it fits and the protective pads stay in place. I'd say for the most part wear a size smaller for your child compared to their t-shirt size, maybe even two sizes if you really want true compression fitting. That said you might need some room to grow for your youth. I can't comment on the actual absorbion or protectoin of this but it feels like it should help and be better than nothing.
