Installed all the new parts included in the repair kit except the large o-ring that was too small. Luckily I was able to use the old o-ring. PVB still leaks though not as much as before. I will need to spend some time figuring out what’s going on. I included two photos showing the new o-ring that’s too small. The other photo shows the original and new o-rings together.

Will replace these every couple years because the plastic portion becomes brittle and will cause water loss when you least expect it. If you ordered 1, buy another one for emergencies. They sell out during the spring and summer, quickly.

Couldn’t find it in stock at any irrigation stores, big box stores or a plumbing wholesaler. Amazon had them and at a better price than the wholesaler who said it would take 4 weeks to get a kit.Seems overpriced for what you get but it did fix the leak.Tip: the top black plastic dome unscrews from the housing by using Channelock pliers on the edges.

This worked perfectly and was easy to install. Install the same as the old parts. Just make sure everything is put back tight enough but do not over tighten. It was somewhat expensive but there weren’t many other choices at the time of purchase.

So last summer I replaced my stop and waste valve (Sprinker underground shutoff valve in case you don’t know what I’m talking about). I paid a company $1,300 to do that. I didn’t want to attempt it myself cause it was 3 feet underground and I didn’t know what I was getting myself into. Sucks it cost so much, but worth it in that scenario. My Wilkins 1” 420 pressure vaccine breaker started spewing out water from the top when I opened the stop and waste valve last week. I was like oh great more money to spend. I assumed it would cost a lot less since the part was above ground. They quoted me $500 to repair/rebuild it if possible(which is what this kit does) and $1000 to replace it if necessary. Any time a contractor gives you the best case and worse case scenario pricing they usually go for the more expensive fix even if it wasn’t absolutely necessary assuming the client will never know anyways. So I set my mind to plan on the $1000 cost. I didn’t want to accept it yet since this part was above ground where it would take little effort for me to at least try to fix it first and hope for the best. This kit provided instructions which were easy to follow. In short you basically do this:1) Unscrew top cover (I had to drill out screw since it was rusted and pliers couldn’t grip it either. You are replacing every part underneath the cover with this kit. So don’t worry about damaging anything underneath the screw. Just don’t damage the cover/cap)2) untwist bonnet counter-clockwise and pull out the guts of the PVB. (The old parts for me were rusted but still appeared to be functional. The inside was full of gunk and a few spiders were living in there. Looked like big chunks of decomposed insects. I think this was thick enough to stop the PVB seal from sealing completely causing water to gush out the top.)3) arrange parts from this kit in the same way as shown in the picture provided. (Don’t forget to place the O-rings in the right spots)4) insert parts from this kit into the PVB and twist on the bonnet5) screw on top cover/cap6) jump for joy that you saved yourself $500-$1000 and treat yourself with some well deserved Taco Bell.
