The tool rest is fine. The post that’s supposed to be 1in is not. It fits loosely in my banjo.

The tool rest looks good. I used it the first time this week and it has a knick on the supposed hardened steel edge (which is only attached with spot welds) and I don't know how it happened. It also has a knick on the hand rest part that I had to file off. I don't know how that happened, either. To me, it appears that the quality of the steel isn't as good as it should be. Sometimes you only get what you pay for, and sometimes you pay more and still get substandard quality.

It fits. It works. It's a tool rest. The quality look fine. I haven't used it too much beyond just an initial "yup, it fits and is smooth where my fingers slide along. My OEM 6" stem is 0.996"dia., this new one is .999"dia. and the hole in my banjo is 1.001"dia. so this one is fairly tight. It will go in but I have to push it a good bit. I have a lot of sandpaper so I'll take off a tad to get that perfect slip fit.Edit: I just did a final sanding on the stem such that it fits more easily (vertically) in my OEM (a 1"dia.) banjo with me having to 'see-saw' it while pushing down such 'a good bit'. I found, while sanding the stem, a layer of what looks like copper. That is typical of chrome plating. So, I surmise that the silver-chrome-looking finish is actually real chrome. I like the chrome everywhere EXCEPT on the stem (perhaps it could have been masked off ahead of plating) unless their stem is reduced in diameter before plating by the plating thickness. A thousandth of an inch clearance is just too tight. My sanding was under 20 minutes, but it was annoying. If you want a chrome finish be prepared to make this stem fit your lathe. Now that I've gone though this trouble I'm generally happy with this tool rest. I'm sure I cannot return it to Amazon now that I've done this to the stem.

It’s strong… but it’s like 2mm larger in diameter… so once you jam it in… it’s near impossible to get out. When I upgraded… I didn’t upgrade the tool rest with off brand garbage like this.

This is a great tool rest. Very smooth and strong. Why the 4 stars? It wouldn't fit into my 1" tool post hole. It was very close but too large. It needed to be sanded down with my power sander a bit before it would slip into the hole. The rest size is good and will fit into smaller bowls as well as handle the initial rough work on the chunk of wood.

I'm new to wood turning and only had a 6" rest when I purchased my lathe. This rest is made from hardened stainless steel and is quite heavy. The finish is smoothe and looks like it will last for many years.
